There is a reason why Ding Tai Fung is on the top list of the things to do of all visitors from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China - the food is really excellent. I didn´t understand whats the hype about and refused for years to go there because I believe there couldn´t be much difference for xiao long bao - (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiaolongbao -which was this place is famous for). But I was wrong - their xiao long bao are really a bit better than anzwhere else. The skin is soft and very thin, but still holds the thing together until you lift it up to your mouth. And when you than bite a small hole in it, the most delicous filing soup will flow out (and its not oily at all).
I have eaten at various branches of Ding Tai Fung at Xin Yi Road ( 信義路二段194號), and the quality is good overall. Still, the original restaurant is a little bit better than the rest, a little bit finer than the otherwise. Go there for the real experiene. Arriving before 5 pm you may be able to get a table immediately, if its later, you need to draw a number. The personal at the door speaks good English (and Japanese, Korean too) and they can tell you how much time you will have to wait with your number. If its more than 15 minutes o for a walk in the nearby Yong Kang Road - some nice shops there. They will display the numbers outside on a display. Dont worry if you miss your number - you dont need to draw a new one. Just give it to the door personal, they will let you in next.
For the food: Xiao Long Bao (steam dumplings) is a must - (I prefer the original filling / steam pork dumplings). One order has 8 pieces - which should be good for 2 persons to try. Other, try also the 紅油抄手 Wonton with a spicy sauce. The sauce is so delicous that I order an extract dry noodle with it and mix it with the remaining sauce. Also good is the 粽子(Zong Zi) and as dessert the 千層油糕 (chinese layer cake)
Service is outstanding, whenever you need something, they will bring it very quick. Tea refill is for free all time.
Attention: the original restaurant does not accept credit cards - bring cash.
