We booked a bit late for our accomodation in Windhoek and only found space in this backpacker. We use very often backpackers and were expecting the same quality of service: nothing fancy, but a decent place with a good spirit.
But that place is definitely a shame! We had to spend 5 nights in Windhoek and found another place (Rivendell, for just a few extra dollars, the difference in quality is huge) for two of the nights. The three others, we spent in this place, not having the choice. Here is our review:
Service: people at the reception spend most of their time turning around, so be patient if you try to phone them or if you wait at the gate for them to open. You have to beg for them to open the gate for your car (after a time, we decided to borrow the key, as it was easier than to have them to move). During the 3 nights/5 days we spent there, we came accross the boss only once, he was coming to get his money. He seems to not care at all about the rest. The last morning, my wife was queuing in front of a shower... to see one of the staff members leave the place! Guests definitely come after the staff in this place...
Value: travelling with a baby, we needed a separate room. We paid N$280, which is for sure one of the cheapest prices in town. But when you see the difference of service in the other places in Namibia (same price in other cities or slightly more expensive in Windhoek), this price sounds ridiculous. The bar isn't cheap, they serve some basic reheated frozen meals for N$60. A cup of coffee is N$10 and the pancakes are free only on the advertisings (at the bar, they will cost you N$15 or 20, I don't remember).
Sleep quality: the mattresses are just pieces of old foam, the sheets and blankets are so old that they tear apart. As it was cold, we asked for blankets... which were not available. Excuse: the backpacker ran out of them. And try to sleep with the noise of the more than old fridge at the end of the corridor!
Cleanliness: we didn't know where to leave our baby play. The room was the less dirty place, but gloomy with loose paint and cracks in the walls, rubbish bins still full when we arrived. The kitchen is beyond your worst nightmares. Dirty, almost no dishes, electrical kettle black inside (I don't even know how it is possible), some pans with rest of food waiting in the shelves, 4 tiny dirty electrical hotplates to share with all the guests... Two showers for all the guests (apparently there is a third one, but faulty), so quickly crowded and dirty. The washing machines are leaking in the yard, with the dirty waters going to the dusty dirty camping. Broken glass in the front yard. Can I stop the description?
Kids activities: take your kids away! This place is not for them.
