“What a fantastic hotel!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2010

My family and I visited Washington D.C. for the Memorial Day holiday. At the last minute I was able to book a room for $99 per night which was a fantastic value.
The hotel is very stunning when you walk in-the lobby is very large with soothing music playing and a glass atrium. The rooms are recently renovated and have a 42" flat screen tv which we loved.
The pluses-hotel is built above the metro so you basically just walk downstairs! Very convenient especially with a stroller. About 2 blocks away is the White House and a few blocks more the National Mall. The Lincoln Memorial was about an hour walk but it was nice out so we didn't mind. There were some seedy areas a couple of blocks from the hotel opposite the white house so just be careful.
The minuses-no vent in the bathroom for shower, pool is small and you must reserve a space and time to use it. Also, if you want to watch a children's channel you must pay for it. There was no cartoon type channel for my kids to watch and we didn't pay the 9.99 (it was that or a little bit more) for it. You can play WII in the sports bar downstairs but it costs something like $10 per 15ms which we declined. Don't get breakfast at Zepher's in the lobby. It's awful food and expensive. You'd be better off at Mcdonalds.

Tips-we booked a room with 1/2 price breakfast buffet which we enjoyed. The breakfast area is near the lobby but there is water running through the area and a grand piano. Very pretty. Also, most museums are free of charge so take advantage. Great italian food at Ela's which is a couple of blocks away plus concierge gave us a 10% coupon

“very convenient location and nice hotel”

Right on top of the metro center subway stop, this is a very convenient and nice hotel. Rooms are nice, and they also have a nice health club facility, although you have to pay extra for it.

“Great stay in Washington, DC”

The hotel is well located, few minutes walk to the White House, the Capitol and the Mall. Near the hotel is also a metro station (Metro Center - combined with the hotel, an underground tunnel). The rooms are ok, clean with standard equipment but small. Bathroom with bath and shower. In the hotel lobby there is a Starbucks where you can enjoy a quick snack and a cup of coffee. For rooms on 12 floors (Club floor) there is a possibility of the club where breakfast is served in the afternoon are the hors d'oeuvres. Very nice stay. I would definitely stay there again.

“Enjoyed this hotel very much!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2010

We stayed at the Grand Hyatt for two nights during the heat wave... We got a GREAT rate as they apparently run specials on Friday and Saturday night? We pulled up and the valet parking was full. However, there is a public lot RIGHT across the street where it was $20/day. So, we parked there and saved some money. The only downside was making a couple of trips to the car when we checked out, but it wasn't too bad.

This hotel is very close to the sights around the mall, and is attached to the Metro via an underground tunnel. As far as food? I would recommend the food court at National Place which is a short walk away and also the Capital City Brewing Company which was right across the street. Both were reasonably priced and good for families with small kids. I had heard good things about Clydes, Cosi and Potbelly, but we never got there, but thought I'd mention them since they got great reviews.

The room itself was nice, but a little small. But we came to DC to see the sights, so that wasn't a huge problem. We had coupons for half off our buffet breakfast since we booked through AAA, and it was really good. I should also mention that they showed Toy Story in the Atrium the Saturday night of our stay. They served free popcorn and lemonade, although you could purchase other food items if you liked. My kids loved it. Since it was SOO hot outside, seeing the movie "by the pond" was a treat.

I also was impressed with the hotel gift shop. I was looking for a specific Christmas ornament and the clerk/manager was extremely helpful in checking to see if he had more in stock.

There were two negatives, but neither was a huge problem. The first was the pool. You had to make reservations which is completely understandable based on the size of the pool and the size of the hotel. However, it seemed to have TONS of chlorine poured in. My kids only wanted to stay about 15 minutes due to the heavy chemicals.

The second was that there were NO TV channels geared towards kids. Yes, we weren't planning on watching TV all that much, but it would have been helpful to keep the kids occupied when we were trying to get ready in the morning or getting ready to go to sleep.

But both were really minor and certainly not a dealbreaker. Overall, we were VERY pleased with this hotel and we loved the proximity to the Metro. I would definitely recommend this hotel!

“Used to be Grand??”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2010

I returned the Grand Hyatt Washington Hyatt for the 5th time after not going to Washington for a few years. Although this hotel used to be on my list of favorites the staff of this hotel has taken to the bottom of my list!

When I arrived at the hotel I used the self-service check in kiosk and check in went very smoothly. However after checking in I noticed that the hotel placed a $202.00 hold on my credit card for an $87.00 room(AAA rate). I realize that hotels place holds on CC for room plus incidentials but I would think that 120 dollars is a bit much of a hold. Secondly my Gold Passport profiles has as one of my preferences a quiet room. I was place in a very nice room, but right next to the Ice Machine on the 8th floor. I didnt think this was going to be a big deal until that evening when all night long every guest in the hotel must have utilized that Ice Machine to fill coolers etc., I heard some pretty interesting conversations and screaming kids, people knocking on my door , all sorts of stuff. As it was late and I was in the hotel for one night, I did not try to get moved. The bathroom is either showing its age or lack of maintenance, the shower although having great pressure the shower head just dangled from the wall and basically shot straight down towards the drain, versus out towards the back of the tub. The drain must have been clogged because after a short shower, I was wading in about 2 inches of water. I complained about this at check out and my breakfast was taken off my bill. I asked to have my room turned down, but apparently the front desk forget to tell housekeeping. I asked to check out later, but my request could not be accomodated.

When I checked out I accidently left some personal items in the room. I called to track them down and was told the hotel would call me back. I waited a few days, called the hotel back spoke with Guest Services who checked a log and told me that my items had been recovered. I was then transferred to Housekeeping to arrange for shipment of the items but got voice mail. I left a message, only to be called 1/2 an hour later to be told that my items had NOT been recovered. I called Guest Services again and asked to speak to a manager, I was transferred to the Manager on Duty who is either not existant or the busiest person in Washington D.C., after 2 voice mail messages I have yet to receive a response. I did however receive a call from Housekeeping today, and told that my items had been found. I was advised to call them with an address as well as a credit card to arrange for return shipping. One of my lost items was a prescription that after being told was not found I had to have refilled at a cost of $61.00. I called Housekeeping to arrange shipping but again voicemail so now I am awaiting a return call from them.

Upon review of my credit card activity this morning I noticed that the Hyatt has yet to release the authorization on my CC although my CC has been billed. I contacted Guest Services about this and was connected to yet another Voicemail.

So now I am patiently waiting for 3 return calls from the Hyatt!!

As I stated previously I have stayed at this Hyatt numerous times when I have gone to Washington. In the past my stays have been nothing sort of spectacular, but this stay just stunk. The hotel is great, the facility is wonderful, and the location cannot be beat. Apparently though my issue is with the staff!!

I hate to say that I would not recommend this hotel to a friend, but after this experience, I dont think I can!

I'm hoping that someone from the hotel contacts me!
