If you like Shakespeare, come to Washington. DC's Shakespeare Theater is the best in America and ranked #3 in the world. New York is known for musicals, Chicago for improv and cutting edge theater. DC is known as the home of classical theater in America, and the Shakespeare Theater is the best among four DC area companies who perform nothing but classical theater. Shakespeare Theater's success is due to Artistic Director Michael Kahn, and its great resident cast of actors: Floyd King, David Sabin, Ed Gearo, Patrick Page, Colleen Delany, Franchelle Stewart Dorn, Emery Battis, Helen Carey, Ted van Griethuysen, Andrew Long, and others. Guest actors have included: Wallace Acton, Jane Alexander, Elizabeth Ashley, André Braugher, Avery Brooks, Dixie Carter, Pat Carroll, Harry Hamlin, Hal Holbrook, Tom Hulce, Stacy Keach, Sabrina LeBeauf, Kelly McGillis, Jean Stapleton, Patrick Stewart, Richard Thomas, Geraint Wyn Davies, and Paul Winfield. Many distinguished guest directors included: Mary Zimmerman, Gale Edwards, Keith Baxter, Stephen Wadsworth, and others. Shakespeare Theater has a 400+ seat theater and a new 700+ seat theater; so they may have two productions on-going at the same time. Both are located in Penn Quarter. They also stage a free-for-all in Fall.
