Booked this holiday whilst looking for reasonable spa holidays in Europe - found it on the Times Spa guide and after factoring in the Trip Advisor rating, cheap flights to Lithuani and price of treatments listed on their website, we thought, 'Why not,' if it's horrific its only about £200 and we'll have seen somewhere different.
I am so glad we took a gamble as it paid off big time. Flight was a mere 3 hours from Gatwick into Vilnius and then a 2 hour drive from there to the tiny town on Druskininkai. We arranged pick up with the hotel for 88 Euros one way. Had it been earlier in the day (we arrived at 11:30pm) I would have opted for a coach which is about £7.50 one way and not too bad, we got this on our return leg, the coach station is literally minutes away from the hotel.
From the outside the hotel doesn't look like much, very plain, like a block of flats. The rooms weren't massively impressive either. However, for around £35 a night, they were very clean, tidy and to be honest you're not going to spend a huge amount of time in them anyway as the spa has beautiful relaxation rooms in which you spend time sipping Raspberry tea in between treatments. Bathroom was very clean, garishly tiled but had a fantastic shower. Take toiletries as they don't offer these as standard.
The spa....was FANTASTIC. The facilities, treatments, decor and professionalism better those of any Kensington or Champneys spa I have ever visited. We booked a package with the hotel which included baths and a few massages and this made the holiday great value for money. I would recommend sitting down with someone from the spa to explain the treatments to you if you haven't pre-booked them as some of the treatment descriptions get lost in translation. Have a look on the website for packages before you book as these may already include the treatments that you want. It may also be worth emailing the hotel for a pricelist of treatments as we saw some on arrival that hadn't been on the website.
Food was ok - we stuck to the cafe opposite the spa which had great quality food, smoothies and juices - the hotel breakfast buffet and lunch buffet were not so great, offering lots of salads and veggies for breakfasts but no fruit or juices - oh well, maybe this was just a cultural difference. I would think twice before booking a package which included 3 meals at the hotel restaurant though....
Druskininkai is a pretty little down but doesn't have much to offer in the way of tourist attractions - have a walk around the lake - go into the 'city centre' and maybe visit the Aqua Park if you get bored of Spa-ing. Chilli Pica offers a nice break from the usual spa restaurants but wouldn't recommed Kollonade for the fish dishes - very strange!
All in all a great time - I was made over head to toe and for a very reasonable amount of money when you compare it to the same treatment prices here. Do remember to take your own flip flops and a bag to carry around your things in the spa as this is the one thing they, annoyingly, don't provide.
