Recent reviews suggest this hotel is either heaven or hell. We found it to be neither!
On arrival at the hotel, we were taken to our suite, which was facing the canal (it smelled a bit like a sewer.) We immediately said we didn't like the location and asked if it would be possible to move. The reaction to this request summed up the attitude of all the staff we encountered there - they couldn't have been more helpful! We were immediately shown to another suite by the pool with the offer of showing us a third, if we were still unhappy.
The suite itself was fine. If I were to highlight some niggles, I would say that a plug socket near the dressing table would have been helpful. There is a hair dryer in the bathroom but woefully underpowered as all hotel hairdryers tend to be. The other point would be that despite seeing no evidence of damp whatsoever, any clothes left out overnight, felt clammy in the morning whether the aircon was on or off.
Despite being half board we only ate in the hotel restaurant twice, but this is no reflection on the quality or quantity of the food on offer - we just prefer to eat out. We are like Jack Spratt and his wife - I don't eat meat, he doesn't eat vegetables! That said neither of us had any problems finding well cooked and flavoured food to eat on either occasion. There was a huge salad bar and an array of hot dishes which would suit the tastes of all nationalities there (mainly Spanish, German and British)
The beach was about a kilometre walk from the hotel along the side of the canal and nature reserve. It's flat and is an easy walk. If you're feeling lazy a cab was about 3euros or the hotel had a bus at set times running to and fro. We ate most evenings near the beach at a variety of restaurants. The menus seemed very similar wherever we chose and most everything came with chips!
There is an ATM in the hotel reception which was useful.
Never having been to the Canary Islands before, I have no idea about the usual standards of a 4 star there compared to other countries. I was very surprised that there was a charge to use the safe in the room as I've never encountered that before and frankly shocked to be asked to pay when we requested to borrow an iron.
All in all it was fine. It wasn't luxurious but then we hadn't paid for a luxury hotel.
