“Not fit for human habitation!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 February 2010

Where do I start? I'll try and cut this long story short. We arrived at the hotel after a long and tiring journey. We chose self catering because we have young children and need kitchen facilities and the freedom to come and go as we please. When we got to the bungalow we were not very pleased. The room was not worthy of it's rating. The fixtures and fittings were tired and worn and the bathroom and wardrobe were disgusting. It also smelled of damp. However, we were really tired and worn out so we unpacked and opened all the windows to try and get rid of the smell and make it feel like home. The next day, when we woke up (after I had been forced to sleep on a dirty sheet with blood on it) we still did not like it but thought we would make the best of it as we were only there for a week and didn't want to be packing and unpacking again. However, things got worse. We discovered our room was right next to a bar with entertainment even though we had requested a quiet room and we also experienced the first of many visitors (cockroaches!) Not just one or two either and they all came from the kitchen area! There was no way we were going to stay in that room so I went to Reception and spoke to the Manager straight away to explain that we could not stay in the room any longer. It was a health hazard! The Manager listened to my complaints and straight away changed us to a suite. The suites are much nicer and on the opposite side of the complex but they don't have kitchen facilities only a fridge. It wasn't what we wanted but we had no choice. It was that or fly home early. We were lucky that we were able to salvage the remainder of our holiday but the fact is NOBODY should be allocated in to the bungalows. They are not fit for human habitation! They should be knocked down never mind refurbished. With regard to the hotel in general, the food was okay but the public areas are tired and in need of refurbishment. The jacuzzi in the main pool has no water in it and the bridge was cordoned off with tape. However, the childrens entertainment and mini disco were good. Would I stay at this hotel again? Never!

“Would definately go back for another winter break.”

Half term in February, weather not great but warm enough most days and hot on a couple. Teenage son loved the activities during the day when he actually got out of the pool. Lots of small pools around but main activities are around the main pool late mornign and early afternoon. Recommend paying the extra to stay all inclusive (You can eat 5 times a day if you want to and drinks on tap all day and evening) food good, plenty of variety for adults and kids. It would be expensive to eat and drink there if not all inclusive and its a good 15 minute walk to the beach and beyond to any real populated area and restaurants. Room abit tired and need of attention, beds not great but loads of space with separate sitting area and tv, we plugged our portable dvd in which was great for kids and all ground floor bungalow style so safe for kids. Patios are small and ours didn't get any sun. Get involved in the activities with the animation team: adults, mini club and maxi club and have a go at rifle shooting, darts, pool, archery, exercise, etc its good fun. Evening entertainment typical animation team, couple of good nights but nothing to write home about. Trips very expensive. Would definately return for another winter break everyone we met was really friendly whether english or european.

“Thouroughly enjoyed a relaxing week in the sun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2010

We were quite surprised at some of the negative reviews as our week away exceeded our expectations.
The reception staff were very efficient and all spoke good English.
The one bedroom had a comfortable bed and nice living area. The bathroom was large and had both a shower and bath. One slight criticism was that the aircon was louder than we would have liked and it could be heard occasionally at night.
We went all inclusive and thought that the food was plentiful, enjoyable and varied. Yes it wasn't always what we would eat at home and some things were cooked in different methods to what we are used to - but it is a Spanish location serving customers from throughout Europe. We could eat continuously from 07.00 to midnight! Likewise the bar offered a variety of drinks and was open from 11.00 until 01.00. The service in both the restaurant and the bar was always first class.
The entertainment was varied and whilst the quality sometimes was slightly disappointing the effort put in couldn't be faulted. Likewise the animation team were always happy and jovial and worked hard to ensure that the punters enjoyed their holiday
The site is about a15 minute stroll to the beach where we could find plenty of nice shops, coffee bars and restaurants. Unfortunately the prices seemed quite high - but that is because of the poor exchange rate between the pound and the Euro.
All in all then an excellent, relaxing week away avoiding the miserable British winter

“Excellent break and had a superb time!!”

Arrived at the hotel and check in was quick and painless. We stayed in bungalow 119 which was right in a corner - but this was great as we had plenty of room to spread out when needed - our 2 year loved it and even though we were next to a road (not noisy) he loved looking at the buses and delivery vans coming and going. There is a fence with flowers growing over it all around the complex so felt very safe. Unfortunately, there wasn't a cot bed in the room so had to go back to the reception and order one - it came even though it took 2 hours to arrive - it came just in time for the little-uns bedtime. The bungalows are very spacious, with 2 bedrooms, a separate lounge area, bathroom with bath and we also had a fridge which came in very useful. The hotel complex is huge and there are plenty of pools to visit. We all loved the childs pool which was quite warm compared to the big pool!! There were 2 playgroud areas with swings, slides, see saw and sand to play with - our 2 year old loved them. There is a shop on site which sells most things but I found the staff were quite rude and the prices are also high - my advice would be to walk into Maleneros, 20 minutes, and visit the larger shops were prices are better and the faces a little friendlier. We went half board and the food was great, lots of choice at breakfast and dinner, no complaints at all about the food or the staff working in the restaurant. The staff are busy as you would expect but they always seemed friendly to us. We also enjoyed the min-disco at 8.30 everynight - 2 year old running and dancing all over the place, felt very safe aswell. We are still singing the songs everyday!! I must point out that there were only a handful of British on the complex but this didn't bother us at all. Everyone else seemed to be a mixture of German, Dutch, French and Spanish - no probelms there. The hotel is 20 minutes walk to the beach and 5 minutes more to Maleneros - great shops, plenty of restaurants and also very nice place just to walk about and people watch. The beach is also fine and the sea, although cold, was great fun to jump in and out of. Word of warning if your using public transport they don't allow prams on the buses, even though they fold!! No idea why and this seemed very strange. We found this out after waiting 20 minutes for a bus to arive only for the driver to point at the no prams sign - not a problem as we got a taxi straight away and overtook the bus on the way - taxis was 5 euros, it was comfortable and the driver(s) very friendly. Also as with all countries using the euro things aren't as cheap as they used to be so take a bit extra just in case!! All in all we really enjoyed our holiday and our 2 year keeps talking about everything we did which we hope means he enjoyed himself. Would definitely recommend this hotel and would consider going again - which is something we never tend to do!!

“Average - glad we moved rooms!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2010

We went to Dunas in November, booked a couple of weeks before and got a good deal with a free child place with First Choice.

The transfer was a bit of a long wait which we were told was unusual, and we were last to be dropped off, but it was good to see all the other hotels en route - be careful where you pick! Our hotel seemed like one of the better ones.

Check in was fine, we were given a pool room, had to ask for a cot for our two year old and got very funny look from the maid who bought it but hey. The room wasnt great, the worst thing was it really stank of damp, the smell was so bad I kept waking up and was worried about my son staying in there. No hot water either. My bed was bad, springs had gone! First thing the next morning i went to reception and they offered me a change of room straight away - made me wonder if they are used to people asking to move? The other room was on a higher level with no walkway above it - it was a bit smaller but didnt smell, what a relief! Nicer bathroom, beds were fine. The good thing about the rooms is they have a seperate seating area with TV etc.

In November we found the pools were too cold, the kids pool was heated but tiny. We were very lucky with the weather, it was very hot. Met some people who said our side of the hotel was the better side.

We booked to go on the Swimming with Sealions experience via the internet before we left UK, its not the one at Aqualand, its run by a lovely lady called Tina - she has a pool in the mountains with two friendly sealions - we were taken there by Charlie who was brilliant, really funny guy- they even had a childseat for us, and under4's were free. Everyone gets in the pool with the sealions and they do tricks - like pull you round on a bodyboard - which they did with our two year old - the only thing was you couldnt actually swim with them which was a disappointment. We were asked not to use our own waterproof camera - you can buy photos of yourself but they seemed pricey. It cost 80 euros, was a good experience.

The food was reasonable - nothing amazing apart from the prawns, there was some Chinese food one night, and Italian another. Great selection of fruit, loads of cakes in the morning, icecream in evening. Service for drinks in the restaurant was bit poor, the staff outside seemed too busy and a bit grumpy at times. There were cats around but we didnt mind that, they are cared for by a charity. We were told we could only use the one restaurant by reception and the rep - there is an a la carte restarant on site but it is privately run.

Our son loved the mini-disco which was at half 8 nearly every night, he had great fun once he had worked out how to do the dances. There is a small playground there too with swings, slide, etc

There was a good shop at the other end of the site for drink, food, water etc.

By the way make sure you zip up your empty suitcases, we didnt and had two massive cockroaches running around in them when we came to pack, they were fast! Just chucked them outside.

The dunes are a good fifteen minutes walk away down an easy path by the hotel, loads of shops in Meloneras and restaurants by the beach - the Chinese buffet was good value - there are lovely more expensive ones further up the promenade.

After a couple of days we wanted to hire a car as the hotel felt a bit isolated, there wasnt much nearby, but we couldnt get one - the rep didnt have any available, nor did the company at the hotel - they said it was because they were changing the fleet but I heard hire companies have smaller fleets due to the recession. We should have booked it before we left home.

My partner tried to go kitesurfing but we couldnt find anywhere to do it, again should have booked it from home.

We all had a good time and i would consider going back, only thing is I would be worried about getting a dodgy room again, and would make sure we got a car. Some of the hotels in Meloneras looked lovely!!
