“Average - glad we moved rooms!!”

We went to Dunas in November, booked a couple of weeks before and got a good deal with a free child place with First Choice.

The transfer was a bit of a long wait which we were told was unusual, and we were last to be dropped off, but it was good to see all the other hotels en route - be careful where you pick! Our hotel seemed like one of the better ones.

Check in was fine, we were given a pool room, had to ask for a cot for our two year old and got very funny look from the maid who bought it but hey. The room wasnt great, the worst thing was it really stank of damp, the smell was so bad I kept waking up and was worried about my son staying in there. No hot water either. My bed was bad, springs had gone! First thing the next morning i went to reception and they offered me a change of room straight away - made me wonder if they are used to people asking to move? The other room was on a higher level with no walkway above it - it was a bit smaller but didnt smell, what a relief! Nicer bathroom, beds were fine. The good thing about the rooms is they have a seperate seating area with TV etc.

In November we found the pools were too cold, the kids pool was heated but tiny. We were very lucky with the weather, it was very hot. Met some people who said our side of the hotel was the better side.

We booked to go on the Swimming with Sealions experience via the internet before we left UK, its not the one at Aqualand, its run by a lovely lady called Tina - she has a pool in the mountains with two friendly sealions - we were taken there by Charlie who was brilliant, really funny guy- they even had a childseat for us, and under4's were free. Everyone gets in the pool with the sealions and they do tricks - like pull you round on a bodyboard - which they did with our two year old - the only thing was you couldnt actually swim with them which was a disappointment. We were asked not to use our own waterproof camera - you can buy photos of yourself but they seemed pricey. It cost 80 euros, was a good experience.

The food was reasonable - nothing amazing apart from the prawns, there was some Chinese food one night, and Italian another. Great selection of fruit, loads of cakes in the morning, icecream in evening. Service for drinks in the restaurant was bit poor, the staff outside seemed too busy and a bit grumpy at times. There were cats around but we didnt mind that, they are cared for by a charity. We were told we could only use the one restaurant by reception and the rep - there is an a la carte restarant on site but it is privately run.

Our son loved the mini-disco which was at half 8 nearly every night, he had great fun once he had worked out how to do the dances. There is a small playground there too with swings, slide, etc

There was a good shop at the other end of the site for drink, food, water etc.

By the way make sure you zip up your empty suitcases, we didnt and had two massive cockroaches running around in them when we came to pack, they were fast! Just chucked them outside.

The dunes are a good fifteen minutes walk away down an easy path by the hotel, loads of shops in Meloneras and restaurants by the beach - the Chinese buffet was good value - there are lovely more expensive ones further up the promenade.

After a couple of days we wanted to hire a car as the hotel felt a bit isolated, there wasnt much nearby, but we couldnt get one - the rep didnt have any available, nor did the company at the hotel - they said it was because they were changing the fleet but I heard hire companies have smaller fleets due to the recession. We should have booked it before we left home.

My partner tried to go kitesurfing but we couldnt find anywhere to do it, again should have booked it from home.

We all had a good time and i would consider going back, only thing is I would be worried about getting a dodgy room again, and would make sure we got a car. Some of the hotels in Meloneras looked lovely!!

“Excellent would go again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2009

We stayed at the Dunas Suites and found the Staff & facilities to be warm, friendly and efficient, Animation team were fantastic with all age groups and made for a fun and enjoyable holiday for all. We were all inclusive which was great value. A wide selection of good quality food available served in buffet style restuarant. If you like your food hot my tips would be get to the restuarant when it first opens, wait for the food being freshly cooked by chefs at the service counters or eat salad. We all had a great holiday meeting many nice people of various nationalities & look forward to returning soon.

“Fantastic place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 December 2009

First of all i alway read other peoples reviews, but please don't believe anyone that has put bad reviews about this hotel as it is lovely.
I have just returned from this hotel and it was much better than some 5 star hotels i have stayed in. We went on a last min deal with alfa rooms the best price for rooms i could find. The hotel is not much to look at from the front but when you check in the staff are so lovely and helpful, we were then taken to our suite through beautiful grounds, the suites are very spacious and just lovely ours was round the pool area which was great for our 2 boys aged 10yrs.
We booked all inclusive which was much more than we expected, the food was exellent lots of choice to suit everyone and the resturant manager was brilliant, he made everyone feel very welcome.
The complex is very large with lots of swimming pools, some of which were heated as it was there winter season, the beach is about 10min walk, but we stayed in the complex as it was so nice we didn't bother to go.
Entertainment is not bad they had a couple of shows on that were ok same as anywhere else i have stayed.
All in all we enjoyed our stay here very much and would recommend it to all ages. I didn't want to leave!!

“An absolute disgrace”

As an experienced traveller i can honestly say that this establishment plumbed new depths of misery. The disgusting rooms - smelly, damp, cockroach and cat infested - were matched only by the "don't give a damn attitude" of the staff. We arrived after dark, but our room was across an unlit and uneven courtyard, with open swimming pool lurking in the blackness - the receptionist" waved her arms and indicated the general direction, then left us to it. When we finally stumbled into our room, we were preceded by a mangy cat (one of many); at least the chase to evict the cat gave us some entertainment, as the TV didn't work. Unfortunately, neither did the air conditioning. The large cockroaches proved harder to evict, but at least they didn't bite - unlike something in the bed in the night. The evening meal followed the same low standard. The restaurant was dirty, full of uncleared tables and more cats. We struggled to get a drink, but when the casual waitress finally brought something, it turned out to be two cups of undiluted orange squash. The food was abysmal.
Having survived to night, accompanied by the scuttling of the cockroaches and the nibbling of the other night creatures, we emerged weary but full of anticipation as we had a 10.30 appointment with the Thomas Cook Rep. He was eminently slappable! He was totally useless, his only suggestion was that we either paid 700 or 1100 euros to upgrade to 4.5 star or 5 star hotels, or go online and book a flight home.
We couldn't bear to stay, nor to pay any more cash to Thomas Cook, so we moved out to the Maspalomas Princess, under our own steam, and had a great holiday thereafter.

Be warned; this is by no means a 4 star hotel, indeed I wouldn't give it a single star!

Dear LindamacHighlands,
we were really amazed to read in your review, that the beginning of your holiday in our resort was like a nightmare to you. As you suddenly disappeared from our hotel without giving us any reason or checking out properly, we had no idea that your expectations were not satisfied at all. As the previous and the next guests in the same room you occupied did not ask for a room change or mention any problem with it, we can not find a reasonable explanation for your extremely sensitive impressions. The food in our restaurant is generally very much appreciated. You surely made a bad experience but we really regret not to have got the chance to help you with another room or with any other kind of assistance in order for your holiday to turn into a very pleasant one.... We thank you anyway for your review and the communication herewith of what happened.
