It is a truly authentic experience:- ‘The Great Stalactite’. It is your only opportunity to see the largest free hanging stalactite anywhere in the world and is one of the most important eco-tourist attractions in Ireland.A new visitor centre opened in July 2010 at the Doolin Cave. Visitors can now drive directly and park onsite. Our latest additions to the site are four donkeys: Daisy, Delilah, Mammy Dora and baby DinkieWe also have a varied collection of chickens: Polish, Bantams, Favorelles, one Derbyshire Redcap, one Wellsomer and a Pecan. I was in two minds whether to visit the cave as I was one of the lucky ones who chose to visit Ireland during the fine spell of weather at the end of September and had this down as something to do in bad weather. However after the disappointment of not being able to walk on the Cliffs of Moher, I had some spare time available and I am glad I did!

After registering and paying at the restaurant, you are then supposed to get a minibus to the cave but on the day I went the minibus driver was ill. This wasn't a problem though as I had my own transport and the cave is easy to find. If you have your own car I think it would be easier just to drive there anyway after paying at the restaurant rather than wait for the minibus as the cave is easy to find and there isn't much parking near the restaurant apart from the nearby pub

Once at the cave site, there are quite a few steps to go down which is something to consider although they have left space next to the stairs for a lift and this is likely to be added in the not too distant future. However walking down the steps gives a great impression of just how far underground the cave is and works well in building up what is to follow.

Once at the bottom there are a couple of tunnels to go through and the guide (whose name I have forgotten) explains a little about how the cave was discovered before arriving at the main cave which is in complete darkness. When the lights are switched on the view of the stalactite you are presented with is simply stunning. It really does need to be seen as photographs can't really do it justice.

After the stalactite, there is another cave to look at with some much smaller stalactites and the guide explained that they are aware of another cave and they are planning to find out what that contains. I doubt it can match what has already been found but who knows!

In summary, I would definitely recommend the tour. It is obvious a lot of hard work has been done to make the cave accessible to the public but it has certainly been worth it and the guide is clearly knowledgeable and enthusiastic. It has not been open long (2-3 years I think?) and I suspect when more people hear about it, it will become very popular. The next time I am in this part of Ireland I will definitely be returning to find out what is in that other cave!
