“The most breathtaking destination for a peaceful holiday”

I'm 16 years old and i have recently been to Abhainn Ri with my mum 42, nan 64 and my friend 16. I've got to say that i absolutelyLOVED IT! The cottage is tucked away in country lanes up in the moutains over looking the stunning Blessington lake.

The cottage was brilliant three bedrooms all en suite, the double bedroom being downstairs and the two twin bedrooms upstairs. The rooms where fairly large and extremely cosy lovely just to snuggle up in the evenings in the warm duvet. The living room kitchen and dinner room are all in one with the log burner, tv and sofas at one end then the kitchen at the other with the table in the middle, with plently of space for 6. The dinning table had an amazing view out of the french doors of the lake. If you walked out to the little green gate thats outside the doors you can go for walks along the owners land. There you will find 3 cute donkeys one being a adorable baby, they where so friendly we went to for a walk to vist them everyday, also there are sheep in other fields. The cottage is very remote, but that is what made it so special, it was so peacful. With a 15 mintue drive to the Blessington the closest small town, there was a Dunnes for shopping, a few pubs, off licence, banks and a load of other types of shops. Also in Blessington there was a resort called Avon Ri which was really good for me and my friend to go to in the day for activities there where many things to do such was all types of water sports, archery, bike hire, gym and pool. We done windsurfing which was amazing and only 15 euros well worth the money, also we went in the gym then the pool which had a sauna, stream room and jaccuizi. Whilst we where doing this my mum and nan where relaxing up in the bar which had a outside seating area that overlooked the beautiful scenery and the lake. We did other things like visting Wicklow town which was brilliant for lovely gifts for my friends, we went to Arklow where we could go in the shopping centre and go to a local pool that had fun sessions. On the way to Wicklow and Arklow we got to drive though Wicklow National Park which was so beautiful just miles and miles of peaceful mountains and unbeilveable views. Also we went to Brittas Bay Beach which was lovely perfect for walks and a dip in the sea. One of the most amazing places to vist was Glendalough when we where there we went in a horse and carriage which went all the way up to the lock and back, there where souviners to buy there too and there where plenty of pathed walks to do. A night that you can't miss was a pud im not sure of the name it might have been West Wicklow pub on a wednesday night they have a traditional irish music night where locals come in one by one and start playing all different types of instuments and the locals where friendly and a right laugh.

On our arrival to the cottage after our flight and drive there, we where greeted by the owner Niamah who had made us homemade scones and left us jam, butter, milk, tea and coffee so we could relax and have a cup of tea and a scone once we had arrived. Perfect touch, they really did go the extra mile, LITERALY. As on the way to the airport on are way back in the rush of getting ready packed and get going my mum accidentaly left out passports behide, we only relised once we had reached the airport which was a 40minute drive away. The owner had been ringing us to tell us but we had missed the calls. In the end she managed to work things out so that my mum could go and meet her half way to give us the passports. What a life saver, she really never had to she had enough to do that day with getting 3 of the 4 cottages cleaned and ready for the next arrivals. No hotel or hoilday resort would be that helpful.

Overall i really enjoyed myself staying Abhainn Ri all of us did, there is plently to do in Wicklow but one thing you would deffinatly need to hire a car. The cottage was so cute and homie, the owners where extremely helpfull they even had a large pack with ton of booklets and detailed inforamtion on everything you need to know about. Definalty a place i would loved to vist again.

“Fantastic Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 May 2009

We booked all four cottages at Abhainn Ri for my relatives from the UK and USA who attended my wedding in April. It was a great family re union. The views from the cottages were just out of this world. The website does not do it justice. We were welcomed on arrival with lovely home made cakes and tea, lovely touch. The owners had just put in walkways through the fields overlooking the lakes. Great to get away for a peaceful walk. The cottages had just been redecorated by the owners and we were delighted with the very high standard. All bedrooms are en suite so it was just perfect for a mixture of family members. My relatives were very impressed with the care an attention of detail. The younger members of our family loved to watch the lambs and wild rabbits in the fields. The cottage has an information folder packed with ideas of places to go a see. Glendalough is only 25 minutes drive away. So it kept everyone very busy. Niamh the owner even gave my aunt a mobile broadband connection so she could work during her stay. I highly recommend this location especially if you have a extended family to accommodate. The standards are very high and It has something for everyone.

“A lovely location, a little complex of 4 self-catering units in 2 large cottages”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2008

The cottage was fine and pleasant for me. The owners call them luxury cottages. Generally this means in self-catering lore that bedding and towels are provided - can also mean, one or more ensuite bedrooms. All three bedrooms were ensuite here, one with a bath which also had a communal door that could be unlocked. 'Luxury' can also mean facilities like, as here, a video player with the T.V. (D.V.D. and V.H.S. players) and, as here, microwave cooker as well as a kitchen oven and perhaps, as here, a washing machine, perhaps, as here, a dishwasher. Heating would be fine in winter, if being prepared to buy the handy peat briquettes sold at the local garage, or nearly anywhere else, and there is further heating.

Living area: nice and comfortable; Kitchen area in the same room: fine and nice for eating at, any time of the day, though neither so different in appearance from more basic cottages, good facilities aside. The kitchen area has sliding french windows and we sat outside on a sloping bit of grass, not private there, but we were not greeted with new acquaintance, undisturbed.

I stayed for a week with my parents. The price was quite good for a holiday cottage in this lovely part of Ireland, especially for a good sized place like this (one bedroom, a good sized twin was spare on our visit, and can make for a good sitting room.)

A car (or bicycle at least) way out in the countryside here is more or less a must unless you like to spend a lot of time in the cottage, and / or walking around the fields and going to Lake Blessington. Or walking 45 minutes down the country lanes or more to somewhere, even if this be just a bus stop to Blessington. It would be fine to cocoon yourself in the cottage and local fields and lakeside, though.

The location is lovely, the views from the French windows and the two upstair bedroom window views. looked down the hill onto lovely Lake Blessington. Lake Blessington is manmade, from the damming of this River Liffey Valley, around 60 years ago, though it looks so in place, natural and gorgeous and is so large that wouldn't be guessed. It seemed as embedded as the Italian Lakes, to my ignorance, until I saw the sides of the lake. The Lake provides a lot of drinking water to around Dublin.

It was surprising to learn, to learn that more or less the whole, vast valley area was owned by the family who lease Abhainn Ri cottages, whom the Irish government bought the huge piece of land from those years ago to make the new lake.

The family still own farmland of 100 acres or so around here, and as the cottages information says, visitors can wander freely from the cottages across their fields, over the stys, down to and around the lake and stay on their land.

It's around 15 minutes walk past some nice sheep down to the lake. On the first evening I had, I swam across the lake to the other bank at this narrowest part of the lake, only because the lake was absolutely still (though an unseeable current held me up a lot near the other side). It took around 30 minutes each way, quite slowly. That was nearly the only chance which I'm glad I took, as the wind made the lake choppy for most of the rest of the week, it might be dangerous.

The gorgeous Vale or Avoca and gorgeous, historical Glendalough are not long drives from here, through part of the Wicklow mountains. The drive around Blessington Lake is gorgeous also, even if it seems you have seen it as best you could from one or two angles.

Blessington is a nice place, with a few gift shops and everything you need for provisions. Closer to the cottages, we visited Poulophoca House for drinks, a very, very small country house hotel with a charming very old, traditional style Irish bar with comfortable nooks. And also there is a very small restaurant there.

We visited the delightful, anciently housed Tour de France Bistro, attached to the well-known and pleasant Holywood Inn bar in tiny Hollywood. The food was absolutely gorgeous to my mind, I trying my companions and loving all of it. There is traditional music there on Saturday nights.

We didn't go, but I think Tulfaris Country Club and Hotel with restaurant and bar is the closest place for drinking and eating out to the cottages. Rossborough house is close for a very large country house with much to see inside. There are many, many attractions around if you can drive, and the cottage had a great folder packed with visitor guides.

The hostess of Abhainn Ri Cottages was very pleasant and efficient. A lovely, simple, scenic, comfortable stay.

  • Liked — A great location, and rather comfortable, pleasant acommodation. Good value, or great value if there are 4 to 6 people.
  • Disliked — The only thing missing was that there was no phone line for dial-up Web access on a portable computer Coming from Northern Ireland my mobile internet machine wasn't registered in R.o.I.

“Excellent holiday and great wheelchair facilities.”

We had a fantastic weeks holiday at Abhainn Ri.

The cottage was immaculate and exceptionally well equipped and to a very high standard. The wheelchair facilities were excellent with a wheel in shower and grab rails wherever needed. The views were beautiful and it was very calm and peaceful. A car is needed though as the cottages are quite isolated.

Would recommend to anyone.
