“Relaxed Country House Hotel in idyllic setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2010

We are just back from a weekend staying at Fort Royal in Rathmullan, Co Donegal and it was about as perfect a short-break as it is possible to get. The hotel is in a stunning location on the shores of Loch Swilly - rolling lawns lead down to the sand dunes and a beautiful wide, gently shelving sandy beach. The sun shone all weekend and anywhere else the beach would have been packed, but here you have it to yourself (save for the odd horse and rider galloping along the shoreline - you can give it a try apparently!). The hotel also sports a lovely pitch and putt course in its grounds, set amongst the pines that stretch along the shoreline. It was a big hit with the kids and Dad alike and welcome relief from the more challenging courses for which this part of the world is famous.

We have a five and seven year old and they just loved it - they were outside all day and the hotel and grounds are so secluded and safe that Mum and Dad got plenty of R&R. The atmosphere is very relaxed, like a big family house, indeed three generations of the owners live in and around the hotel. There is even an honesty box in the bar! The staff are very personable, efficient and the service excellent (to young and old alike).

Tim who runs the place is also a marvellous chef and there was a great selection of locally sourced dishes on the menu both nights. He will come and share a drink with you afterwards and a few stories about the local area. The kids menu was good also and very generous and reasonable.

We had rooms in the main house which were charming, spacious and had lovely views. Two rooms adjoined by a little sitting room was perfect for us and the kids. I believe there are also converted stables at the back, but the hotel remains small and discreet and seems to attract a good mix of clientele from couples, young families and retired.

Overall, thoroughly recommend it to anyone visiting or passing through Donegal.

“Lovely setting, nice breakfast, very poor shower”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 March 2010

Lovely grounds, great location beside great beach for walks etc. Had a nice room with large bay window, comfortable bed, lovely breakfast, nice staff. The only letdown was the shower - it was a hand-held shower over the bath with no shower curtain. No other complaints but the shower definately let it down. I think if you pay E75 per person you should get a good shower.

“Not cheap, but probably worth it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2009

It's not a cheap weekend, but it;s a very nice weekend. It's in a quiet corner of a quiet town, and is a lovley place to spend a relaxing break.

The rooms are clean, large and comfortable. The food in the restaraunt is very nice, but again expensive (although this is mostly because the Republic of Ireland is expensive in general to a UK visitor). The evening meal should be done though, as it is top quality cooking.

“Lovely place, lovely grounds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2009

We stayed 2 nights at the Fort Royal. The grounds are just fantastic, and the house is lovely. The service was also friendly and helpful. Our room was surprisingly modern in appearance, and had a great bed. I have two gripes: some of the other guests were quite loud, and kept us from sleeping. The management doesn't seem to manage this issue, or to try to encourage guests to speak quieter. In addition, I think the Fort Royal is somewhat overpriced. However, having said that, we had a lovely time here.

“Wonderful weekend in the North West”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 June 2009

We have just returned from three days at Fort Royal and I would like to say what a special place it is.
Having read the previous review on my return, I don't agree and consider the complaints a little petty.
We had a lovely room overlooking the lough and were able to stroll down to the beach directly from the front lawn.
We had dinner all three nights and would definitely recommend it to others.
If you like to stay in small quiet hotels, with lovely grounds and good food, then I would highly recommend this place.
The big question we ask ourselves when we stay somewhere new is , will we come back ?
and the answer is a definite yes.
