“beautiful location, charming hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 April 2009

My husband and I visited Fort Royal for the third year in a row. It is a charming small hotel with lawns that roll directly on to the beach, beautiful manicured gardens and a charming walled kitchen garden. The service is what sets Fort Royal apart from any other hotel you will stay in, the welcome is genuinely warm, the staff are local and attentive, and the owner Tim Fletcher is a wonderful host as well as a talented chef. The food is locally sourced and beautifully cooked, breakfast is delicious with fresh fruit, porridge and of course a full cooked breakfast if you prefer. The orange juice is freshly squeezed. The drawing room offers real fires, books about the locality and views across Lough Swilly - at night the lights on the opposite shore reflect on the lough - magical! You will enjoy this hotel if you appreciate good food, good service and beautiful surroundings. Families with children will appreciate the proximity to the beach, the surrounding woodlands and the facilities at the hotel including tennis and golf. You can also easily walk into the local village and get great entertainment in the Beachcombers Bar, or an outstanding meal in the Water's Edge restaurant. A place to come back to time and time again.

“Definitely a 'must return' holiday experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2008

Our family group of two adults and four children loved staying at this hotel. If you are after the generic international specie of hotel - continue looking. However if you prefer to experience a lovely location and very friendly staff - consider this hotel.

The hotel itself, once a private residence, has lots of character, has lots of nooks and crannies and lots of atmosphere. We had three rooms and all had beautiful outlooks. The kitchen garden was a gourmands delight and for those who love nature there was an arbour full of many varieties. Fort Royal hotel has it's own 9 hole "Pitch and putt" style of golf course which is beautifully maintained and clubs can be obtained in the office.

There is also a tennis court right beside the beach. The beach is immediately adjacent with swimming a possibility. Frequently you see a race horse or two on the beach cantering or galloping past.

The food was excellent, yet not too fancy. Other visitors we met were on their fourth or fifth visits - apparently is it a gem kept well hidden by those in the know!

Think green, fairly isolated, peaceful and restorative.

  • Liked — the location and the sense of nature
  • Disliked — that I had not booked more nights here

“Relaxing Short Break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2008

We have just returned from a super weekend break in Rathmullan staying in the Fort Royal Hotel. The hotel is so peaceful , relaxing and well run in the hands of Tim Fletcher proprietor/manager. We were made most welcome by every member of staff that we came into contact with.

The food is also very well done with the use of good quality local ingredients in the obviously skillful and carefull hands of Tim who is also the chef.

There is a reasonable wine list that should satisfy all needs of taste and price points. The house wine was good value and well selected.

My only gripe was the lack of a shower in our en-suite, this was a minor matter though everything else made up for this.

Coffee and drinks after dinner in the lounge or bar overlooking Lough Swilly was a good way to end each day.

The gardens are well maintained and contain a 9 hole pitch and put course that is a real challenge to anyones short game.

Great location right on the beach.

“Great Manor House”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 June 2007

We stayed 3 nights May 24/25/26 and had a wonderful time. The Manor House is located right on the beach with a great little Par 3 golf course. The staff was very helpfull with all of our arrangements. We dined at the Manor House for 2 nights and the food was exceptional. I can't say enough good things about our stay.

“Lovely Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2007

I know we stayed last september, but I still wanted to mention Fort Royal Hotel to other people. The hotel was exactly what my wife and I needed at the time. We had a very relaxing few days with wonderful food, scenery and hospitality all around. The hotel only has 15 bedrooms , so it is nice and quiet and relaxing, with the lovely beach only a few steps from the front lawn.
We had booked dinner for only our first night, but after enjoying it so much we ate the other nights of our stay also!
We will definitely return some time soon.
