“Peig Manages Her Guests”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2009

I had read the reviews, but wanted to accomodate my son's desire to stay in a castle. We showed up about 1 1/2 hours later than I forecast in the conversation with Peig from my home in Texas. When she answered the door, she was quick to point out our tardiness and we were scolded like children. "After all," Peig said, "what if I, as owner of the B&B, didn't keep my schedule?" At this point, I was reminded of the reviews I had read before booking. But there is more to share.

Unlike most B&Bs, where breakfast is served between 7:30-10 o'clock, we were told that breakfast would be served @ 8:30. When Robert and I arrived, we were escorted to a table with English speaking visitors so we could "share conversation." More control than we were exposed to elsewhere, but our table mates were wonderful, so no complaint.

I had washed some underwear and socks, so inquired of a maid how to reach the clothesline clearly visible from the window in our room. With her answer, I proceeded to hang my tidy-whities out to dry and we soon left for the day, a day that would be marked by threatening clouds and heavy rain. When I returned to Carigeen, the clothing had disappeared from the clothesline, but I rediscovered all completely dry and folded on the windowsill in my room. "Great," I thought!" The next morning over breakfast, Peig approached me to say that they had taken the clothes down as rain approached and that I could find a laundromat in town if I needed to do up any additional clothing. Her comment struck me as a not-too-subtle suggestion not to use their clothesline again.

This all said, the Carrigeen Castle and Peig Butler will long be remembered for running a disciplined operation to achieve ends that Peig Butler had decided upon in the interests of her guests, her staff, and her home, which is what makes this B&B very unique. Don't let her brusk manner scare you off. The facility is imbeccably clean and well-maintained. The food is excellent and the service ("Will you boys being having coffee or tea this morning?") very professional.

The Bedroom and Diningroom were very clean and tidy.
Breakfast at 08.30am was prompt and very good value.
Mrs Margaret Butler and Son David were different but intresting, as was staying in a Beautiful Castle.
The surrounding Countryside is Beautiful beyond compare.
Very Good Value for money and i hope to return again.

“The castle is amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2009

A great place to stay if you ever want to stay in an actual castle. The place has so much character and is unlike any other place you'll ever stay. Located within walking distanced of the town, but very quiet.

The owner (Ms. Butler) is a nice lady, but will let you know if you do something she doesn't agree with. She was nice to us, but made some strange comments to the other couple staying there.

Food was OK but and she was attentive to our requests. We ate at a nearby Indian place that was good and a nice change of pace from the Irish food. The nearby Cahir castle is worth visiting.

“Butlers better by far”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 May 2009

We have stayed at Carrigeen Castle on many occasions.
Each time we have had top class service.
Peig is a wonderfull entertaining Host as is David.
Any request that we made for a room on the ground floor have always been catered for.
Great value and a super breakfast.
Peig guided us to Cafe Roma in the town.
Four of us had a great meal at a total cost of 40 euro.
Thanks again Peig and David.

“Beware of the dragon lady”

My stay at Carrigeen Castle was one of the creepiest experiences I have ever had, namely due to Peig Butler.

She rudely welcomed us when we arrived at 4pm, insisting that we had written a confirmed email for 4 guests when there was only the 2 of us. After our dinner at this random overly priced Indian restaurant down the street, my mom and I decided to go watch a movie since the castle is slightly depressing looking at night. We got back to the castle around 11:30pm, and Peig condescendingly told us that guests at her home usually never keep her up that late. When I forgot my phone in the car, and stepped out to get it, she was standing in the dark hallway (she slept in the room next to us) in her pajamas and nightcap inquiring what I was doing. She did the same when my mom went downstairs to get her book. In the morning she knocked on the door to tell us the time as it seemed like she was eager for us to get up and going. She then sat down next to us while we were eating our breakfast and talked profusely about Cahir (which was fine), but again, real no appreciation for space and privacy.

All in all, an unforgettable stay. I rarely post reviews, but I definitely wanted to make sure anyone that read this what they were potentially getting into.
