Just returned from a fantastic week skiing in Soldeu.
The Skiing: The snow conditions were brilliant (lots of powder all week), the runs extensive and the ski school second to none (our instructor Graham was excellent). Everything was very well looked after and impeccably run. A fantastic resort for beginners and intermediates, but also plenty of more challenging runs and lots of off-piste to keep more advanced skiers/boarders happy.
Hotel: Lovely looking hotel with lots of wood and stone - just what we were looking for. Comfortable rooms of a good size and with strong showers, although the rooms in general could do with a slight revamp to fit in with the lovely public areas of the hotel. No tea and coffee making facilities unfortunately which was disappointing. Nevertheless definitely nice enough, especially when you spend all day on the slopes.
The staff were very friendly, particularly in the restaurant. The food was varied and fresh. There was a choice of two meats and one fish every day which was cooked in front of you, plus much more to choose from.
Make use of the complimentary spa pass for the Wellness Centre at the 5 star sister hotel (The Hermitage). You have to use this pass on Monday or Tuesday and go before 3 pm, but it's well worth coming down from the slopes slightly early as the Spa is truly top class and the views are beautiful. Don't forget your flip flops though as otherwise you will end up having to buy some there! It's also worth enjoying a few drinks in bar at The Hermitage as the hotel is gorgeous. It is much more expensive then the Sport and we aren't really willing to pay so much just for a better hotel on a skiing holiday, especially when the Sport is so good anyway, but it is nice to enjoy the Hermitage for drinks in the evenings before or after dinner. The two hotels are connected so you don't even have to step outside!
Value: We went on Sunday 31 January and paid £667 each (booked through Thomson/First Choice) for half board hotel accommodation, flight, transfer and a 'ski improvers package' (full lift pass, lessons and hire costing £230). Prices for food and drink on the slopes compared favourably to other resorts, and it was easy enough to ski down and go to places at the bottom of the slopes which were inevitably cheaper and better. I had hot chocolates, lunch, après ski, wine with dinner etc everyday and only spent 150 Euros.
Would definitely recommend both the resort and this hotel. Can't wait to go back!!
