First of all the pluses. I found the reception staff, friendly, knowledgeable, helpful. The hotel is immacualately clean and the rooms are well appointed. The hotel is in a great location in a very upmarket part of the outskirts of Cascais. When there was a problem with the WiFi the Manager himself came round very quickly and resolved the problem. Excellent staff overall.
I booked a standard room online, but it was very dark - partly due to the nasty dark red/maroon decor and partly due to the overhanging design of the balcony. I paid to upgrade and had a much nicer room with a beautiful view of the sea, lighthouse, castle etc. I'd definitely recommend NOT staying in the standard rooms overlooking the carpark. And I'd definitely reccomend the hotel tries a lighter colour scheme in these dark rooms. Celings are incredibly low in the bath room, so when a 6ft chap like me stands in the shower, my head is knocking the ceiling.
My main disappointment was the dining room. The buffet area was incredibly cramped and badly designed, so really hard to get round it when the restaurant was busy. The hot food (at dinner and breakfast) was immensely unappealing looking and tasting - dry, sparse and congealed. When busy, food was not replenished quickly so there were huge gaps in availability of certain key dishes. Things like the fresh fruit had obviously been prepared the day before and had gone brown. Truly awful instant coffee for breakfast. Why do 4 and 5 star chain hotels never serve proper coffee at breakfast???
All in all a bog-standard 4 star chain hotel - well appointed but soulless, with poor food and very ill-judged decor! I definitely wouldn't stay there again, and after a similar experience at a Vila Gale hotel in Madeira I wouldn't stay in any Vila Gale hotels in the future.
Definitely ask for Sea View room - the standard rooms are dark and depressing.
