“Misleading reviews, to say the least!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2010

Having read reviews here prior to our visit, we decided to stay at the Old Quarter, BIG MISTAKE!!! We paid £200 for 3 nights for an en-suite double but when we arrived and checked in we discovered it was a twin with the beds both top-to-tail. I went downstairs to refuse the room but was told that this was the only one left. It was late and I decided to wait. So much for a sexy time in the Dam with the missis! The second day was even worse, after what was a pathetic breakfast, I again asked for the room to be changed, only to be told that she would have to speak to the manager. 5 hours of heavy smoking later, we ventured back to the hotel and fell asleep, only to wake up itching, that was it, i was gonna lose it but my partner doesn't like a fuss, so i kept quiet. That night, the room was freezing( it was mid-Feb) and noisy. The next morning i was fuming and demanded to see the manager, they then couldn't be more helpful, moving us to a room across the street which was really nice, if only they'd have give us that room in the first place. The only good thing? Location.

“Excellent location, worth paying extra to overlook the Canal.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2010

Overall, we were very happy with this hotel. Although it was rather pricey for a double en-suite (90 Euros), two years ago we paid about 60 Euros to stay in a cupboard with no windows! That's why we chose to splash out a bit, and so happy we did. After reading other reviews that say how noisy the street is, if you pay for a room over looking the Canal, you are away from all of this. We were in room 22 and had a comfortable, quiet nights sleep. The wet room/toilet was clean, and the room itself was big and airy. We were shocked to see two huge windows that opened fully to give a great view of the city. The location was fantastic, just next to the red light district and you could even see the Grand Central Station from our room. The staff were friendly, and always prompt to get our keys and buzz us through to our room. The breakfast that was included was nice, although choice was non-existant. I would definately recommend this hotel.

“Sleepless Nights!!”

I hated this hotel! Pretty much from the moment we walked in! The girl behind the bar was grumpy and spoke like she couldnt really be bothered with us. We had to leave the key behind the bar every time we left, then stand like idiots while hotel staff took ages to press the special buzzer to open the stupid door! We stayed in room 11 which was at the front on the first floor looking right onto the street. I slept for about 2 hours maximum a night in the place. There is a coffeeshop next door and one across the steet, infact all the way down the street. Everynight up until 4 or 5 in the morning people were outside shouting and singing, if you were lucky you got between around 6 and 7am is was quiet but then the bin men come around 7 and words cannot describe how loud it was. Everytime anyone moved around upstairs it was like a herd of Elephants. On the last night we had to get up to get out by 11am and I'd had to little sleep that when the bin mean came I had to put my headphones in my ears or I was going to scream! Seem to be covered in bites, and noticed a few other people saying that so it obviously hasnt been sorted, sooo itchy and all over my body. We did eat there one night and even with 10% it was still rather pricey. Shared bathroom was ok. Shower was disgusting, very small and no where to even hang your towel! Towel had to go on the floor and ended up getting soaked along with the rest of my clothes I had to take in with me to avoid walking back to my room in just a towel. The rest of the staff were extremely helpful apart from the one girl with the nose peircing. On the last day when we were checking out she said ' are you checking out?' and we said yes, she then just said 'ok then' and we were waiting to ask if we could leave our bags somewhere she turned her back then turned round giving us a flithy look as if to say 'why are you still here!?' Room was ok, no remote for the tv! (no one like getting out of bed to switch of the tv!) very very basic, no worth the money at all!! Definatley wouldnt recommed this hotel!

“Great trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2010

I stayed in amsterdam for 3 days, 2 nights. Me and my 3 friends arrived at central station and found it was only 5 minutes walk to the hotel, the hotel is in a great location (couldnt have asked for better really), its 5 minutes to dam square, 5 minutes to centre of light district. We arived at the hotel and talked to an english women who worked at the hotel/ bar. She was not very friendly and also a bit moody. However all the guests staying at the hotel were allowed to leave all their luggage at the hotel in a small storage cupboard until the room was ready. We went out for the day and them came back to go up to our room, the room was on the top floor, the was 4 single beds and a private bathroom. There was also a tv which had alot of english channels on it. Breakfast was included in the price, you got 2 eggs and some bacon, alot of toast and tea or coffee. Overall it was very good value for money, we only paid £22 a night for bed and breakfast which is cheaper than alot of hostels in the area. Even though it was not the nicest of rooms, you are hardly paying alot of money for it and you will not be spending all you day inside the hotel. So don't listen to the reviews that say its dirty and small because yoy get what you pay for, if they wanted facilities of a 5 star hotel then they should pay out the money for it. I would definalty recommend this hotel to others. It is in the perfect location and very cheap.

“Location location location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2010

The location of this hotel makes it! Right in the centre of everything and with the train station less than 5 minutes away. The room was basic but pleasant enough. Laura on reception was very friendly and was able to advise on lots of local attractions, and bars/coffeeshops!! All the staff were very helpful, nothing was too much trouble. A already can't wait to go back.
