“casual level of comfort with a perfect location just in an old city centre”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 April 2010

Very basic and clean enough hotel, with a lovely Amsterdam atmosphere - very high and narrow stairs, old windows. First room we've been offered was a really small corridor type, with 2 separate beds, after our complain we got a much better room in an opposite building - with a big double bed, 4 windows (!) on a 3rd floor! The room was just great! The location is great - you can reach most of the sights by foot, but it is too noisy for sleeping - in the night you hear the tourists all around and in the early morning they start cleaning the streets and collecting garbage from the streets - so close the windows and take the ear plugs if you have problems sleeping in a noisy places. Toilette and shower are clean enough for a shared facility, nothing scary, but I always prefer to use my own slippers. Decorations and interiors are quite old and used enough, but everything is cozy and clean, stuff is really friendly and helpful. Breakfast is small (2 fried eggs, small piece of bacon, bread with butter and jam), coffee they always give more on a request. At the hotel restaurant you have 10% discount, if you want to eat something. I would definitely come back and can recommend it for young couple or friends for a short period of time (we were 4 nights there).

“Simple, clean and cheap - superb location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2010

Simple old Amsterdam building. The best/most expensive rooms overlook a canal. Mine was simple and comfortable with toilet and shower shared with next room. Stairs are very steep. Staff were friendly and helpful. Wonderful location - 5 minutes walk from Central Station to the North and 3 minutes to Dam Square to the South. On the west edge of the Red Light District. Loads of restaurants and bars.

“Budget and basic but excellent value for money- Perfect location!!”

Myself, my partner and my brother in law stayed here for 2 days - 1 night. The hotel was exactly what we expected, believe me I am extremely fussy and a clean freak so if you read this review I am giving you an honest and genuine review and to balance out some of the not so good comments as I dont think they are all fair. The value for money is great - we paid £90 for three of us which includes breakfast ( which is nearly £8 Euros each in most of the cafes ) and dont have any grumbles. Of course if you want a romantic get away or a luxury break then this isnt for you but if you want a great deal on a budget and love to be centrally located then book it.

Location - you couldnt get a better location, five mins from the station and literally in the middle of the hustle and bustle without being in the red light district. Great for being able to get about easily and we always felt safe. We have been to amsterdam on numerous occassions and stayed in 5* for special treats, 3* apartments and I dont think you could get a better location.

Room - Okay well I do expect a lot from a room, more with regards to cleanliness which the room was clean. The decor is dated and yes it could be redone but that is no different to a lot of hotels in Dam but was clean with clean towels and clean bedding!
If you go expecting a cheap deal - which the room rates are excellent but a basic service then you will have no complaints.

Service - we were always greeted with a smile and was always served quickly and efficiently when we required something. easy check in and check out.
Also they keep your key and have someone on reception to assist you which is good as you never have to worry about losing the key.

Overall a bargain hotel

“Charming Old Quarter”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2010

I have just returned home from a three night stay at the Hotel Old Quarter, where I visited with my mum. (17th - 20th Feb 2010). We paid 205 euro's for 2 of us, for 3 nights with en suite (we booked with easytobook.com).

The bar/restaurant in this hotel was very charming, played great music and served great food. However, the rooms were not of the same standard (though we didn't really expect much anyway). The rooms were very simple but contained everything you would need. Our only disappointment was the rank smell in the bathroom, which was repulsive. We reported this to reception and they bleached the bathroom but the smell re-appeared the next day. The smell was so bad that we took to using the shared facilities which were located on the downstairs landing.

The breakfast in the hotel was delicious. Bacon and eggs and toast with jams. Also tea and coffee (orange juice at an additional charge). On the morning of our departure we had an early flight but the staff were more than happy to make us toast and tea at 7am. The staff in this hotel (and in Amsterdam in general) were all so helpful and pleasant.

This hotel is located very close to the red light district (although not too close). It was literally a 5 minute walk from central station. The location could have been any better, we were surrounded by charming pubs and cafes selling home made pastries, buns and sandwiches. It took us 5 minutes to walk to Damn Square and about 3 mins to the Damrack where there are lots more cafes and shops (including C&A)! This was our first visit to Amsterdam and we found everything very easily.

On our second day we bought tickets for the hop on/hop off water boat. This stops at various locations around Amsterdam at a cost of 20E each (located near central station). We visited the local flee market which was a great experience (pashmina's and hand made bracelets, etc, at great prices). We also visited the Anne Frank House (we booked tickets online in advance as queues were huge - 9E each!)

All in all, we loved our trip and will definatley be going back. Our only disappointment was the smelly bathroom but the location was second to none!!
