“Get rid of the staff!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2009

Following a visit to this hotel I came away with mixed views. The general location of the hotel is great with a short walk to the main squares. The rooms were clean, beds comfy and bathroom fine.
The staff however left something to be desired. I actually wondered whether they took a course on impoliteness and discourtesy prior to getting the job. During my 3 night stay I failed to see a smile on anyones faces and this was backed up by silence when I said good morning to them.
This is a shame as the rest of the experience was good although parking was extortionate at around 30Euros per night - I would have expected a pillow and blanket for the car at that price!!

“Very good hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 June 2009

The rooms are good, quite and clean. Very good breakfast. From the hotel you can reach the old town in just 10 minutes walking. The staff is kind and competent and gave us very good suggestion on how to spend our time in the town and in the near area. However, the garage is rather expensive.

“That 70's Hotel. Formerly modern and elegant, now seems forgotten.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 March 2009

Hotel: This towering skyscraper of a hotel was clearly a former modern high-end hotel for Genoa, but the lack of updating screams 1960s, 70s or 80s. Outdated enough to be somewhat amusing. Massive spacious lobby and many other built-in amenities. (I believe there was a restaurant and imagine a pool or other facilities exist). Oddly, the staff locks the front doors to this massive hotel... which gave me the concerning impression that crime might be an issue.
Room: Spacious room in quite good condition, inlcuding fresh-looking bed linens on a massive bed, mini-bar, good TV, and giant windows looking down on Genoa. Bathroom also was large and in good condition.
Parking: Underground garage parking was nice, though quite expensive.
Location: On a central square / auto rotary with many lanes of traffic circling around a small park. Gave the neighborhood a non-pedestrian-friendly feel, as walking required crossing streets with 6-8 lanes of traffic. Though it is close to some of central Genoa's sights and an easy point from which to walk around the city.

“Hotel stole our money”

We were three friends staying at the hotel for one night. For the triple room we paid approx 160 euros. Standardwise the hotel was good, and the breakfast acceptable, although as usual in Italy it is impossible to find anything healthy.

HOWEVER! We unfortunately left some money in the room, on one of the beds. We noticed this the following day and phoned the hotel who said they did not find any. Normally this would indicate that we left the money somewhere else, but in this case all three of us are absolutely certain it was left on the bed (under the pillow). Even though we could pinpoint the location of the money, it was not found - making it clear that whoever cleaned the room took it.

If this happened in a one star bed & breakfast I would not be surprised, but when it happens in a hotell with 4* and a member in a big hotelchain it is more worrying. Therefore I can't reccomend this hotel.

  • Disliked — Not trustworthy, stole our money.

“Wonderful Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2008

My wife and I stayed at the Starhotel President in Genoa on the second night of our Italian Vacation as we decided to spend a night in Genoa on the way to Santa Margherita. We chose this hotel due to its proximity to the train station. (We decided not to rent a car)

We are both very active and believe the best way to see any place is by walking, preferably without luggage, so we did not mind the location or the 20 minute walk to the aquarium and the historic town center. Staying over a Sunday night meant the hotel was very quiet.

We arrived Sunday afternoon and checked in. The hotel is a business class hotel and is getting a bit dated but is still very functional. For the dated part, the key was a boat anchor that you left at the front desk – as we forgot our umbrella and camera and went back to the room for what seemed like 49 times it would have been nice just to have a card like other hotels. The rooms did not have a safe so we used the hotel safe in what felt like a procedure out of James Bond. The staff was very helpful and very pleasant. They provided us a tourist map and a walking route and offered to sell us aquarium tickets.

Genoa was nice and we enjoyed the aquarium and wandering around the old town. Sunday afternoon is date night at the aquarium so it was kind of cool to observe. There was a street market market near the hotel and we enjoyed the energy of the city. Genoa is not a tourist trap (like Venice) and has rough and gritty feel to it.

One of the reasons we stay at hotels like the Starhotel is that we utilize a hotels public space to relax in. The lounge and bar at the Starhotel are beautiful but there was no energy because the hotel was empty. As we were at the start of our trip we were happy to find a drink at a café. For dinner the hotel recommended a pizza place a couple of blocks away. The meal was outstanding.

I realize that beds are a personal choice, but both my wife and I found the mattress outstanding and had a great sleep.

On Tripadvisor we read a number of other reviewers panning the breakfast. Either the hotel has improved or we do not know what a good breakfast is. The breakfast was the best of our trip and consisted of a beautiful room, fantastic service, and a wonderful assortment of fruit, juices, cereals, sweets, breads and hot dishes. The Italian bacon was excellent, the eggs were cooked to perfection, and the breakfast sausage was outstanding. Now this is not quite what we get at home, but that’s the point of traveling, no? The highlight for me of the breakfast though was the espresso – what a wonderful treat as part of a hotel buffet breakfast. Based on the breakfast, if I would stay at this hotel again I would try dinner.

Overall a wonderful hotel and wonderful staff.
