stayed at Villa Soro for five nights to celebrate his 50th birthday. From the moment we arrived at the airport and were met by the taxi driver arranged by the hotel, we were very well looked after. The hotel is an elegant, yet homely place with fantastic helpful staff. Check in was efficient. The rooms are clean, spacious and quiet, even though ours was facing the road into San Sebastian and we left our window open at night. We had breakfast in our room and it was more than adequate. Villa Soro is a good 15 minute walk into San Sebastian and we enjoyed this aspect. You can walk along the seafront promenade into the old town. We ate on the quay one afternoon and the turbot and bottle of Rioja were fantastic! We also visited a number of tapas bars and as previous reviews have stated the standard is very high. They are bustling places after about 7.30 at night. The La Cuchara was our favourite were we sampled a selection of the hot items off the menu all delicious. We also visited Martin Berteguisi (incorrect spelling i think) as a special treat and had a fantastic dining experience from his tasting menu (not cheap but well worth it). The restaurant staff were attentive, and brought out a cake with a candle for my husband. Martin even came out and we had photographs with him, a signed menu and dinner plate, all in all a perfect evening. Unfortunately we had to cancel our planned trip to Exteberri so that will be included in our next trip, because i fully intend to return. San Sebastian has it all, the beautiful green scenery (it did rain on and off during our stay), three beaches, panoramic views, romantic walks, the bustling old town with the tapas bars and restaurants and the new town with great retail! We were in town at the same time as the film festival and i was relieved that i had not booked into the Maria Christina as the hotel was constantly surrounded by paparazzi. We did see Brad Pitt though!

“Overrated & Overpriced!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2009

Normally not one to write reviews, I felt compelled to express my concerns about this Hotel following our recent visit. We booked our trip to San Sebastian a few days prior to arriving, staying in a standard room. Based on the images of the hotel on the website we arrived with certain expectations. These were soon shattered when we were directed to a ground floor room in the quarters behind the main building. Whilst the room was relatively large, it was also relatively empty. Worse was the fact that the only natural light into the room was through the glass panel in the door. However, these are apparently not the worst rooms in the hotel as there are a number in the basement of the main building.

When we approached the staff to express our concern over what we believed to be a misrepresentation of the hotel, they (he) effectively dismissed us. We were told we could pay an increased rate for one night and the leave the next day or simply suffer a cancelation fee and go.

In summary, we had only chosen to stay at the Villa Soro as a result of our late booking. In hindsight, if we had been able to book further in advance the Luxury Collection Hotel (in the middle of town) would of offered both a "cheaper" (yes, cheaper!) alternative as well as what I would expect to be a far higher level of service.

Overall, one of the most disappointing "Luxury" hotels that I've experienced in Europe.

“Beautiful Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2009

My wife and I stayed here for two nights during San Sebastian's Fiesta week.
This is a beautiful sofisticated hotel about a mile and a half from the old town ( a pleasant walk). Lovely room and delightful staff although breakfast whilst OK was a little disappoining for a hotel of this quality (and should be included in the price of the rooms which are not cheap).

“Period elegance - but stay in the new extension”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2009

Impeccably presented period Villa hotel, located in an established area, close to the centre, once a fashionable residential area. Worth noting the hotel is a on a very busy road, so we reserved a room in the modern extension, set back behind the original house. This afforded us a tranquil stay and room was well proportioned and furnished. Although no restaurant, drinks and snacks are of a very high quality and beautiful presented with 5 star-style attention to detail. The same was true of the breakfast which we took in the room, as we had a small garden terrace. Staff very professional and friendly.
Although there tae o views of the famous La Concha bay, I recommend this property over the more touristy promenade alternatives. We had a rental car and were able easily drive the short distance into two and park but there are cabs and buses – and of course you can walk when it’s not raining!

“Elegant hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2009

We stayed in this small city hotel on honeymoon this summer and found it a good base for staying in San Sebastian. Some people may prefer to stay closer to the old town and la concha beach but we enjoyed the walk from the hotel to zurriola beach where you can continue along the prom to the old town and la concha beach. The main hotel building is very elegant. Our room was in the newer building to the back of the main hotel but that was not a problem. The room was very nice with tasteful, quality furnishings, a good bathroom and a comfortable bed. (After our previous stay in the horrible Zelai hotel in Zumaia this seemed like a dream!).
The hotel is in a residential area so there are no views to speak of but you will most likely spend most of your time out exploring beautiful San Sebastian.
