stayed at Villa Soro for five nights to celebrate his 50th birthday. From the moment we arrived at the airport and were met by the taxi driver arranged by the hotel, we were very well looked after. The hotel is an elegant, yet homely place with fantastic helpful staff. Check in was efficient. The rooms are clean, spacious and quiet, even though ours was facing the road into San Sebastian and we left our window open at night. We had breakfast in our room and it was more than adequate. Villa Soro is a good 15 minute walk into San Sebastian and we enjoyed this aspect. You can walk along the seafront promenade into the old town. We ate on the quay one afternoon and the turbot and bottle of Rioja were fantastic! We also visited a number of tapas bars and as previous reviews have stated the standard is very high. They are bustling places after about 7.30 at night. The La Cuchara was our favourite were we sampled a selection of the hot items off the menu all delicious. We also visited Martin Berteguisi (incorrect spelling i think) as a special treat and had a fantastic dining experience from his tasting menu (not cheap but well worth it). The restaurant staff were attentive, and brought out a cake with a candle for my husband. Martin even came out and we had photographs with him, a signed menu and dinner plate, all in all a perfect evening. Unfortunately we had to cancel our planned trip to Exteberri so that will be included in our next trip, because i fully intend to return. San Sebastian has it all, the beautiful green scenery (it did rain on and off during our stay), three beaches, panoramic views, romantic walks, the bustling old town with the tapas bars and restaurants and the new town with great retail! We were in town at the same time as the film festival and i was relieved that i had not booked into the Maria Christina as the hotel was constantly surrounded by paparazzi. We did see Brad Pitt though!
