This hotel was booked as a weekend away for my wife and I along with some a friend and her husband and was chosen as the hotel claimed to be a 5-star hotel. The room we took overlooked the vineyards and cost 120 euro per night. When booking the room I was advised that it maybe noisy due to a train line and advised to opt for the room overlooking the river at 400 euros per night. Once we arrived at the hotel and was shown our room, it was apparent that the pictures on the internet of the hotel were very misleading and glamorous. The hotel walls outside our room (the one for 120 euros) and in the lobby had wallpaper falling off, the carpets looked really old and dirty and the train noise was absolutely unbearable. The hotel fails to tell you that the train line is actually a heavy goods train line that shakes the hotel as trains pass and there is a train line at the back of the hotel and also another one across the river in front of the hotel.
As a gesture of goodwill and as the hotel was empty, we were offered a room overlooking the river instead (the 400 euros one) which is literally on the opposite side of the corridor to the previous room. This room was not much better, the carpet was old and had cigarette burn marks in, there was cobwebs on the inside of the windows and we found 3-4 beetles roaming around in the room. The train noise was quieter but you could still hear it. Words really fail me at the poor standard of this hotel and especially when it claims to be a 5 star as it is in major need of upgrade and improvement. I would say that by UK standards this hotel is probably 2 stars and I have had more comfortable nights in popular discount hotels in the UK for far less money.
I would recommend not paying extra for this hotel as there are many others in the area for less and equal or better standards. The hotel management failed to compensate anything for the awful experience. On a plus note, the restaurant food was good although very expensive. I would recommend eating out of the hotel down the road as there are many equally nice and cheaper a-la carte restaurants in the area.
The scenery around the area is very pretty and if in Germany I would definitely recommend visiting this location, just don’t expect much from the Krone Assmannshausen.
