I've waited a couple of weeks to write this review, on the premise that some of my annoyance might abate -- but alas it did not. After considerable internet searching we (my wife and I and 20 year old son) reserved a 3 night stay directly with the Pension (via email but no credit card confirmation required). Two days after our arrival while on the way to Mittenwald we had an accident with the rental vehicle in the early evening, which required it to be towed. ADAC was very gracious in helping get us to a nearby hotel, from which we called the Schwalbennestl to inform them we could not make it there that evening because the rental car company was not open and we would not be able to get another vehicle until the next morning.
The next day, new vehicle in hand, we proceeded to Mittenwald and checked in at the Pension. The hostess informed us then that we would still have to pay a portion of the previous night, even though the delay was beyond our control, and even though we had notified them immediately.
The rooms were adequate, small in size, nicely but not lavishly decorated, with balconies overlooking Mittenwald -- which is the main reason to stay here. Breakfast was fine, about average but with all the typical European menu items. You can walk to town, about a 10 minute walk (downhill -- thus uphill on the return). If you have trouble with stairs this is not a good place, as there is a flight of stairs from the road to the door and then two flights down to the rooms.
At the end of the stay, I appealed once to the hostess, explaining the delay was beyond our control, that we had called immediately, and that it didn't appear they had many guests anyway. Falling on deaf ears, she insisted that German law permitted her to charge for the two nights plus a portion of the first -- even though there was no credit card confirmation requirement to guarantee late arrival (as is usual). It seems that because they were not very busy she was interested in generating more revenue.
I guess what put me off most of all was the general sense of "I don't care" attitude that was displayed. She was efficient in her job but didn't evidence any real warmth towards her guests, as we have found in other places throughout Germany and Austria. With so many great places to stay around Mittenwald I would not return here again -- which is too bad because other than the hospitality the place is fine for the price.
