Allthough we normally stick to 4-star hotels, the scarcity of well-reviewed 4-star hotels in Nice lead us to choose Hotel Berlioz. This was on the basis of almost universal good reviews and we also liked the look of the decor (a lot of competing hotels have horrible 1980s design). The hotel was recently bought by a Vietnamese family, who are extremely friendly ahd helpful. The owner has good English, but the rest of the family speaks only French. This wasn't a problem for us as the owner is quite often around and we have conversational French anyway. Overall, we were very pleased. Our 2 rooms were nicely designed, clean and comfortable. We had only two slight problems: there was at times a scarcity of hot water and the supplied towels were small and were only changed when we requested it. However, we felt that the general comfort of the hotel, the friendliness of the people, the location and the low cost more than made up for these problems. Tip: if flying into Nice, arrange to be picked up at the airport by the hotel's shuttle service, operated by the owner's Dad! He's very friendly, helpful and it costs a lot less than a taxi. Another Tip: the Negresco hotel is at the very end of the same street as Berlioz hotel, on the beach. It has great restaurants and a private beach where you can hire sun loungers and order drinks/hot food (fab) from the bar.
