My family and I stayed in the Clarion Hotel this weekend. The hotel overlooks the River Shannon. In fact, the pool and the dining room are actually cantilevered out over the Shannon. We had a wonderful stay there.
Our room was lovely if not very big and we were delighted with our own view out over the famous river, onto one of the bridges of the Shannon up to King John’s Castle, a medieval castle located opposite the famous (or rather infamous) Treaty Stone (on which the treaty of Limerick was signed in 1691). We could have stared out of that window for hours.
We had dinner & breakfast in the hotel which very convenient. The food was good. Breakfast was a buffet style with plenty of variety. The restaurant setting was like being on a film-set in somewhere like New York, looking out the big open windows, at the twinkling lights on the river below and seeing the distant traffic passing across the bridge ahead.
Limerick is small and historic so we were able to do a little shopping as well as visit some of the great sites of Irish history, including (as I mentioned above) the castle and the Treaty Stone in addition to the Daniel O’Connell monument, the Tait clock, the potato market, alms houses dating from 1691, St Mary’s Cathedral built in 1172, the Hunt museum, the city walls, Pery Square's Georgian houses etc. It is possible to walk to most places... though we didn't walk to St John’s Cathedral & the Sarsfield memorial which are slightly longer away from the hotel.
Carparking for the hotel is in the adjacent Europark and there is a reduced charge for that.
We will definitely go back again.
Ask for a view towards the castle if available.
