“Don't stay here if you want a good nights sleep!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2008

Having read the reviews on tripadvisor.com, we decided to give the Skeff a try. We got a good Internet deal, as we thought, so were happy to try it out.
On arrival we were happy with the nice reception and modern family room that we received.
Having returned after dinner that evening, we were getting ready to tuck in for the night, as we had a tour of Connemara booked for the following day and wanted to get a good nights sleep.
However, at 9pm, while watching some telly, we noticed a distinctive thum thum in the backgroud. This continued to get louder and louder.
At 9.30pm, we decided to investigate and discovered that our room was only a few doors down the corridor from the back door of the upstairs bar.
When we went down to reception to enquire, we were told that it would be going on all night. On our booking form, we had requested a quiet, smoking room, but had received a non smoking room only a few doors down from the bar. Because graduations were going on in Galway that week, the students were out in force.
We were offered a room move, but at 10pm at night, when you are already in your pyjamas and unpacked, this is not an option. We were also told that a manager was unavailable to speak to us at that time and would contact us in the morning. No manager ever did and we actually saw no management presence at all during our two night stay in the hotel.
We eventually nodded off at 1pm out of sheer exhaustion.
The following morning, we awoke tired but looking forward to our day in Galway. We headed down to breakfast to discover that it was served in the same bar which, a few hours earlier, had been a busy nightclub.
The floors were still sticky from the last nights drink and clearly had not been washed properly. The bar was dark and dimly lit-not very suitable for breakfast. We had to wait 30 minutes for our cooked breakfast and when it eventually did arrive, it was cold and congealed- not very appetising.
The noise was the same on the second night, if not worse. At this stage, it was quite clear that the bar was the number one focus for the hotel and not the hotel guests. At 2pm in the morning, when we had eventually nodded off, we were awoken by a late night reveller shouting on our corridor. It was obvious that he had escaped the confines of the bar onto our corridor next door.
We did not bother with breakfast the second morning, as it had been so bad on the first morning, and proceeded to check out.
At this stage, the hotel were trying to charge us double the rate that I had booked on the Internet. Because I had my confirmation from the website with me, I got charged the correct amount, but was told that the website in question would have to pick up the difference. No so, when it clearly stated on our confirmation, the total cost for a two night stay for bed and breakfast, and the hotel was charging us double the amount.
The rooms were lovely in this hotel, but when you cannot get a good nights sleep and a decent breakfast, this takes away from that. Also the hotels clear lack of care for hotel guests, when placing rooms so close to the thriving bar, shows that the bar is clearly the number one focus in the hotel, and not the paying guests. We will not be returning to stay at this hotel.

“Galway Treasure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2008

We arrived in Galway late and walked around looking for a hotel.
Was attracted to the Skeffington Arms but the lack of parking put us off. Luckily we decided to stay and were able to park at a near-by carpark for 50% discount -- about 11 euros for the night. The Skeffington Arms is in a pedestrian precinct so it meant draging bags -- but I notice some cars did manage to use the pedestrian walk way to unload -- the receptionists were not sure what the rules were!!

This aside the room was great -- newly refurbished and the check-in staff friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good -- but service a little slow -- no buffet.

Centrally placed and a most attractive hotel. We will return.

“Staff made our stay special”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2008

Our one stay at the Skeffington was in celebration of boyfriends 50th Birthday on our week trip in Ireland. Amanda at the front desk was charming and helped make our stay very special. Our room was incredibly clean, modern touches - obviously had been recently re-done. Could have been a little noisy with a club on back street, but wasn't an issue at all. We loved our stay at the Skeffington in Galway.

“i'll be back....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2008

just back from a great weekend in galway - stayed at the skeffington arms - what a central hotel - it was great especially for me i could do my shopping and drop off bags and off i went again.....booked it from their website - to be honest i was worried from one or two reviews on tripadvisor but the hotel has been renovated and it's top class, our room was fab and my partner loved the massive tv in our room. Bed was so comfy. We ate in the bar on our first night great food and atmosphere - staff lovely. Overall i will definately be back - gonna book my next stay for some Christmas Shopping! Staff are so friendly at the front desk too they made us feel very welcome and could not have been nicer - every time we walked through the lobby they always acknowledged us and had a chat....

“A little Gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2008

Last month, my girlfriend and I went over to the west of Ireland for a few days. We were only coming from Dublin so I didn't do much in the way of researching places to stay. I've been to Galway many times anyway so I had a good idea what to expect, prices etc. For the sake of convenience and its excellent location we stayed in Jurys for the first night. For those of you who are familiar with this chain- you'll know they are usually perfectly fine though really have no character or charm.

As such, the next afternoon we walked around the city centre having a look for somewhere else. We saw most of the hotels on Eyre Sq before eventually stumbling upon The Skeff. I'd always known this place as a pub but hadn't realised it also offered accommodation. We went in to enquire about a room and prices and found out the hotel had just been renovated- evident from the smell of fresh paint everywhere! Anyway, the place seemed very nice but it wasn't till we had a look in our room that we realised what a litlle gem we'd found!

The room was spotless- and because of the very recent renovation (the hotel had just reopened that week!) it was furnished to a very high standard. Admittedly the room wasn't huge- but it had a modern and really cool look. A big comfortable , modern-style double bed with lots of pillows, a deep shagpile carpet, trendy pine furniture, a very modern and well-equipped bathroom and the flat screen tv on the wall helped give the room a boutique, ultra-modern and stylish feel. We were really impressed.

As I travel quite a bit I am sometimes disappointed by the customer skills of Irish hotel staff when at home here but the two girls at the desk were absolutely charming and couldn't have been more helpful and polite. The price (about 95 euros) compared compared extremely favourably with the other hotels/b&b's on Eyre Sq and the room we stayed in was far superior to the others we'd looked at.The price included breakfast which was in the adjoining pub which admittedly didn't share the same modern feel of our room, even so, the breakfast was definitely one of the better ones I've had in an Irish bnb/hotel.

As i mentioned, the Skeff is right on Eyre Sq which makes it ideally situated in the heart of Galway City right beside the bus and train station. The hotel doesn't have its own car park but has a deal with the car park at the train station (less than 5 minutes walk) It cost about 7-8 euro for 24 hours which I thought was very reasonable.

To be honest, I have nothing bad to say about the Skeff. At a push, i'd mention that there was no view from our room- the window overlooked the back of a building right next door! As I said, the place had just been renovated so obviously we went the perfect time, perhaps after a few years things might not be so good! It is joined to a pub, we stayed there during the week and it was very quiet.

In conclusion, if you're going to Galway and looking for a room, service and location well above its competitors and indeed its asking price I would have no hesitation recommending the Skeff.
