A friend and I stayed for one night at this hotel and were happy to be leaving the following morning. We weren't looking for anything fancy, and didn't mind the fact that the Hagley Court is a bit shabby and worn around the edges. We just wanted somewhere clean and reasonably inexpensive to stay, and the Hagley Court fit both those criteria.
The room was adequate except for the temperature. It was like a sauna in there - and with no visible way of adjusting the heat, all we could do was keep the window open all night and fry silently in our beds. I didn't want to wake up the hotel staff in the middle of the night, so I waited until morning to report the problem to the front desk. The staff member nodded and smiled but offered no explanation or apology, which seemed a bit strange.
That same morning, we discovered that the shower in our ensuite bathroom wasn't working. The solution offered by the hotel was to use the shower in another room down the hall. This bathroom had not been cleaned since its previous occupant’s departure, and I was interrupted during my shower by the housekeeper who had evidently not been informed of the situation. In addition, the water temperature constantly fluctuated between warm and icy cold, without my touching either of the taps.
When we came to check out, I politely related these problems to the front desk staff and requested a discount on our bill. This request was denied due to an “adequate alternative” having been provided by the hotel. Showering in a dirty bathroom down the hall from our room and being interrupted whilst doing so is hardly adequate as far as I am concerned... but I couldn't press the point with the manager as we had to get going to make the train.
If it hadn't been for the management's attitude, I would have given this hotel one more star - but I was pretty unimpressed with the hotel's lack of interest in our comfort or satisfaction. Not recommended.
