I don't want to be too negative, Frankly, I'd probably stay here again. (The Tripadvisor nomenclature that goes from "average" to "very good" doesn't help here.
We stayed one night while sightseeing and looking over the Christmas market. This was our second stay in an M Gallery hotel and the first was excellent, so I was expecting something a bit special.
First the positives: The hotel was extremely well-located in a lovely Georgian building, clean, newly done up. The room was fine, the bathroom good, bath- and bed-linens excellent and the room rate fair for a city-centre hotel in a popular location. The lounge and bar areas were good, spacious and with plenty of comfortable seating. The staff are very willing. However...
We were not able to check in when we arrived just after the designated check in time of 14:00. We were told the room would be no more than five minutes, so went to wait in the lounge. After ten minutes we went back to reception and after some to-ing and fro-ing, we were told the room was ready. I appreciate that this can happen, but there was no need to tell us it would be less than 5 minutes and then make us wait fifteen. All we wanted to do was see the room, drop our bags and go sightseeing.
The room was small, which was not unexpected, but there would have been room for a king or queen bed, rather than the double that it was furnished with. We found the decor is a bit strange - more an attempt at something trendy than in keeping with the period. Also, like many hotels, the rate for breakfast is just silly. I assume only business people on expenses, people with too much money and people who don't ask eat it in the hotel - we certainly didn't. There are lots of lovely independent and chain cafes within 3 minutes walk where you can get an excellent breakfast for well under half the price. We had breakfast at the Roscoff Deli in Northumberland Place and I had the best cup of coffee I've had (outside Italy) in years.
