For years and more or less since it first opened, BV his been my "High Street" and (except for the Oska shops in London), I rarely shop anywhere else. For as long as I can remember, besides the usual "opportunistic" purchases stumbled upon in the course of wandering around there I generally always found at least one of whatever item it was I was looking for at the time: coffee grinders and cafetieres from Bodum, pillar candles from Kenneth Turner, cheap-o knickers from Calvin Klein, suitcase from Sampsonite, "purple label" Ralph Lauren jacket at 90% off RRP, a two-years' supply of scented candles, shower gels and silver-plated gift objects from Penhaligon's, jillions of Nicole Farhi jumpers and trousers and THE most WONDERFUL Loewe handbag AND leather jacket for less than 1/3 the price of the handbag alone, serious Mulberry "bargains" at wonderfully "silly" prices like 25 pounds for a 250 -pound pair of leather jeans.... Heaven!
HOWEVER......having said all that, BV seems to be going the way of the real High Streets: favourite stores are disappearring (although BV, itself, is expanding in size) and the pool of REAL "outlet" "bargains" drying up . Gone are the true-"bargain boxes " of "treasures" and shops such as Kenneth Turner, Loewe, Aquascutum, Nicole Farhi, Bodum, Monsoon, Feraud, TSE and others of my favourite shops only to be replaced by strange "Boutiques" full of ....impossibly bling handbags and impossibly unwearable shoes, and etc. PRICES in the shops seem to have RISEN and the shops , themselves, to have got less "outlet" in character and rather more "elegantly shop-like" in presentation (for example, the Burberry Shop, Ralph Lauren shops, Temperley, Alexander Mc Queen, Anya Hindmarsh etc. etc.)--so that , in general, it seems to be becoming a place full of glitzy-looking shops selling last-year's merchandise at a general 30%-40% mark-down---precisely what you might pay if you "shopped the sales" in London, Oxford, Bath or wherever...
"Up to 70/80% discount" does not mean AT 70-80% discount! There are a slew of newly-opened brand shops selling old, unsold merchandise at exactly the same "discount" as any Department Store after-Christmas/summer sale (Carolina Herrera , Tory Birch and Max-Mara, among others, spring to mind in this regard.) And then, too, many of the shops CREATE and sell OUTLET-QUALITY MERCHANDISE made especially to be sold at "bargain" prices in their outlets (so that some of what is on sale was never, EVER sold in the proper shops.... and you must be aware of this practice)
If exhausted from "bargain-hunting", and you want coffee, a drink or food, you can get a decent sandwich, etc. at Pret a Manger, lovely (if pricey) Italian Deli or proper meals at Carluccio's, waffles and Starbuck's fare, Thai food at Eathai,( but avoid Villandry: their food is bad and overpriced and my experience of their manager has shown him to be a moron.....)
So, like the proverbial "old grey mare", shopping at BV "ain't what it used to be", but it's still fun!!!!
