Communication prior to our arrival had been quick and clear. The owners had arranged a larger parking spot for us. The location of the property was also great, central and quiet with great views.
When we arrived there was a large pile of mail on the doormat and I walked into a large cobweb as I entered the property which led us to believe noone had been there for a few days.
The small outside area was covered in dead leaves and plant boxes with dead plants in. There were dead insects on the floor and in the upstairs bathroom, the floor was covered in tiny beasties. The 1st thing we had to do on arrival was hoover all the property.
There were also bits of plaster that had fallen from the skirting boards on the stairs and in the lounge.
A small cupboard in the kitchen was broken as the hinges on the door were broken.
The skylight in the upstairs bedroom didn't have a working blind so it was very bright in that room at night.
The beds were comfortable and clean and seemed freshly made.
A couple of the towels had stains on.
The majority of reviews have been so positive but the most recent one in the visitors' book sounded like they had had a similar experience to us.
The price we paid most definitely did not reflect the standard of the property. I contacted the owners twice during our stay but received no explanation, apology or offer of compensation or refund which is really disappointing.

Disappointing
Abbey View cottage is well located on the West Cliff side of Whitby. It is bigger inside than it looks from outside. Good sized rooms. Parking available. Plenty of cutlery and crockery etc. Beds comfortable
DOWNSIDE!! The cottage was dusty and dirty in places. . Smelled damp and musty especially as you walked in and in the kitchen cupboards. All crockery and glasses had to be washed to get rid of the smell. Roller blinds were dirty. Some broken. Paint flaking off the woodchip wallpaer on the landing. The hallway wasn’t inviting. Dirty doormat and dirty entrance. The guest review book showed more positive comments, it certainly wasn’t renovated to a high standard as described on the website
Enjoyed our stay in Whitby. Didn’t enjoy staying at Abbey View

Thank you for your feedback. I can't understand how this has happened. As you mentioned youself, we usually get more positive comments which can be seen in earlier reviews. If you would like to contact me directly off line, we are willing to discuss appropriate compensation.

Ticked all my boxes
The Abbey View Cottage is a delightful 3-storey home in the heart of Whitby, walking distance from the harbour and with parking virtually at the door (i.e. in the lane alongside), excellent fish & chips round the corner, and cafes nearby. The cottage has all mod cons while retaining original features and a homely atmosphere. There’s a jack-and-jill toilet/shower room on the landing, between the two double bedrooms, on the first floor. We only used one of the beds, and it was very comfortable. The third bedroom, on the second floor (with a bathroom), looked also very comfortable and I think would be a delight for any child (or adult in a single bed!). The kitchen/dining/laundry room is fully equipped, and it was a bonus that when you’re standing at the kitchen sink, you have a clear view of the Abbey ruins (and you have that same view from the front door and from two of the bedrooms). The lounge has lovely comfy sofas and the TV has all the usual channels. Albert and Jillian responded promptly to all contact and questions and our weekend Short Stay was very enjoyable. I would hope to book the cottage again next time we’re in Whitby.

Very good stay
We booked this cottage for a special birthday celebration and were not disappointed.
The cottage is extremely well placed to walk to everything in Whitby in a matter of minutes being on the immediate outskirts of town. The street is very tight and you have to be wary of the size of your car when manoeuvring to unload and then park in your allocated space.
The cottage is very well appointed with three decent sized bedrooms. Our granddaughter loved her own single bedroom up on the top floor. The front double bedroom could do with a black out blind/thicker curtains as you have a street light bang outside your window.
The upstairs bathroom was very clean, spacious and modern. The Jack and Jill shower room could do with a bit of refurbishment.
The kitchen was very well equipped and had all you could ask for. One point to note is the details state there is a freezer. This is in fact the ice box in the fridge.
The lounge was spacious and comfortable with plenty of space for everyone to sit around and relax.
The central heating system was very good, once we knew how to work it (after a phone call to the owners). We did feel the place lacked an information booklet for such things. We did manage to use everything we wanted by working things out but would have been much easier with instructions for such as the TV system, cooker, dishwasher etc.
It would also have been useful to have had wi-fi. I understand the reason for cottage owners not paying for a wi-fi system but with so many gadgets reliant on it these days, especially teenagers, it could become a bonus to have it and the cost built into the price.
We had a minor problem with the stairs landing lights not working on our arrival. One phone call to the owners had this sorted in a matter of a couple of hours which on the Sunday before New Year was excellent service.
We really enjoyed our stay. Enough room for the five of us not to get under each others feet. Lots of extras provided like games, books, DVDs, CDs and very clean, modern and tidy generally.
I've tried to give a balanced view on stay but overall I would have no hesitation in recommending this cottage to anyone. If they have as good a time a we did then they will be more than happy.

Abbey View cottage
A clear view of the Abbey and minutes from anywhere in Whitby. A cosy, comfortable cottage. Whitby has much to offer: walking, entertainment, shopping, views.

Location location location
Lovely cottage, in a very central location spectacular view of the abbey from the front windows. The interior of the cottage is cosy and very comfortable with plenty of room in the kitchen , lovely front garden which you can sit in ( it’s very small) and enjoy the view and the pretty window boxes and tubs. The lounge is a perfect place to relax after a day exploring Whitby.
The cottage was tidy and the beds so comfortable. The added parking space was a bonus. The hosts Jillian and Albert are easily contactable if you have any queries .

Whitby is situated at the mouth of the river Esk. It is divided into the East side and the West side by the river. A swing bridge connects the two sides and is swung open at high tide to let fishing boats and yachts through into the upper harbour.
The East side has the old cobbled streets, Whitby Abbey, St Mary's Parish church and the 199 steps, the Lifeboat Station and the Old Market Place. On the West side at the waters edge are the fish markets where the Whitby fishing fleet lands its catch and all along the waterfront wine bars, pubs and restaurants are located. Further back from the harbours edge antique shops, tea rooms and more restaurants can be found.
Whalebone Arch is situated on the headland on West Cliff and the bones that make up the arch were a gift from Whitby's twin city of Whitby, Ontario, Canada. A bronze statue of Captain Cook is adjacent to the Whalebone Arch and is usually found with a seagull sitting on his head admiring the view. Whitby Pavillion Complex is nearby where theatre shows, dancing of all styles, music concerts and much more can be enjoyed.
Pannett Park, Whitby museum and gallery were a gift to the town from local solicitor Robert Pannett. The museum contains, amongst other exhibits, Captain Cook artefacts and information about Whitbys whaling past.
An open top bus tours around the town for most of the year visiting all the major tourist attractions. Or step back in time and have a ride on 'Elizabeth' a vintage steam driven bus, and visit Whitby's attractions at a more leisurely pace.
Many 'themed' weekends and special events take place during the year including Goth weekends in Spring and Autumn, Northern Soul weekend in July, Whitby Regatta in August - one of the oldest sea regattas in England where teams from Whitby and Scarborough compete and the Whitby Folk Festival also in August where musicians can be found playing on virtually every street corner.
Captain Cook Memorial Museum is located on Grape Lane and is housed in the building he lodged in while training to be a seaman. Two of the vessels he used on his long journeys of discovery to Australia, the Endeavour and the Resolution, were built in Whitby.
Bram Stoker was inspired to write his classic novel Dracular while staying in a house on the West Cliff in Whitby, and many other authors including Wilkie Collins, Lewis Carroll and Charles Dickens have all visited Whitby for inspiration.
Whitby is one of only two places on the east coast where you can see the sun set over the sea, strange but true.
