Beautiful building, period furniture, stunning views and great location. Qualities that should make it a great hotel. However...

-It's tired, shabby and in a bit of a state of disrepair (torn carpet with duct tape, cracked bath panel etc.)
- Dated rooms that need a deep clean. Dust made me sneezy, old TV takes up so much space, replace with a mini firdge perhaps. Bathroom fan is so loud that it wakes you up in the middle of the night
- Useless wifi. Too slow to even use regular features on my phone. Didn't even reach the bedroom, only public areas
- Average breakfast. Fruit had ran out all three mornings, standard cooked breakfast buffet other wise. Nothing special or overly tasty.
- Some staff were great, others not so much. Parking was full so we parked on the grass along with other cars. When we entered and headed towards our room a staff member said quite loudly to a colleage "Are those two the two who just parked on the grass, they can't park there, it's rainy and we don't want to ruin the grass" to which her colleague agreed, however it took my boyfriend to say yes we parked there. We then moved the car to find out that others just continued to park there anyway. Quite a rude way to speak (or hint) to your guests.
- For a surfing destination it could be useful to have places to dry wet suits, or at least a line in the bathroom

Not all negative. Having the washing machine was very handy. Table tennis was fun, strange but good addition to the bar area. Didn't use the pool or spa, but also a lovely facility addition.
This place has so much potential, you can imagine it was superb in its day.

Room tip: Ask for a sea view

We visited in October 2015 using a wowcher for 2 nights bed and breakfast. The hotel is situated in easy walking distance of the town centre. The beaches are also easily accessible although you do need to descend to the beach and then climb back up the path to the road.
The public rooms are quite grand with a very impressive staircase. The room however was quite small and very dated. It needed decorating and the TV and kettle etc were very old. The ensuite bathroom was tiny and had a mahogany loo seat, hopefully its not been there since the 1980s!
The breakfast room had sea views which was lovely and the staff were very accommodating. The quality of the breakfast was good although there was not much variety of fresh fruit.

We visited the hotel following an offer on Groupon for a standard double room with breakfast. The hotel is in a perfect location, and looking at it from outside it's beautiful, staff are helpful too. But the rooms are so tired, dirty carpets and squeaky floors. The first room we were given was smelling of damp. We complained to the staff who were very helpful and upgraded us at no extra cost to a family room, which was ok but could be better. Breakfast was ok. Well set up at the restaurant and staff are helpful.

My partner and I stayed in the Ocean Suite, having booked on Booking.Com and just booked a superior room with sea view, we really weren't expecting a suite so beautiful!

The room was very spacious, with a large balcony and the most amazing view of the Newquay/Cornish coast, we could even see the lighthouse at Land's End on a clear night! They provide an empty fridge and wine glasses in this room, which was a really really nice touch.

The bathroom was spacious, as was the bedroom and we were very happy with our stay.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, which was very lovely.

Despite not looking fabulous from the outside, the building has beautiful architecture and I'll definitely be visiting again when in Newquay!

Suitable for families with mature / well behaved children, couples and friends too! Very very very happy overall!

Restaurant menu seemed limited so we ventured out next door to Senor Dick's Mexican Restaurant.

Will recommend to anyone looking to stay in Newquay.
