This hike is very popular - about 8.3 km one way (5.3 miles) and gains 2,100 feet. After a boat ride across the lake to the trail head, you start out in the trees but soon breaks out into the open. There are lots of switch backs, rocky faces and views are excellent. The Crypt Falls dropping from the headwall is amazing. The most interesting part of the hike appears once you are through the old campground and rest area. An iron ladder allows for passage through the rock face. The tunnel is narrow and rocky - only about 4 feet high. Once on the other side the trail is very narrow for a short way but quite passable. At the lake you can relax and enjoy the beauty and look for goats. Don't fall asleep though as the boat only makes two trips back in the afternoon and if you miss the last boat you have a LONG walk to get back to Waterton Townsite.
