With a very cheery welcome at the airport and a luxury limo transfer the holiday was off to a fantastic start. Our friends from the states had already arrived so check in was a mixture of catch up and paper work, which doesn’t really work. We were up graded to a beach front room on the first floor of the Sandringham block, which is a fantastic location, although the rooms are some of the older ones on property and the bathrooms are looking tired. They have a covered balcony which, if you have nothing better to do is the perfect oasis with a couple of glasses of chilled wine and either read your book or watch the world go by, no chance there then.
The property is more compact than the Halcyon, which we have visited before and the gardens are not so extensive but the grounds men keep them beautifully. You have to hire the kabanas here and this is done through the concierge desk for either a day or half day, this does bring the bonus of someone to fetch snacks and drinks. While we were here they were building a fire pit, which will be a nice addition. This could have been done very swiftly by machine with noise however they chose to do it by hand, which was quiet and quite entertaining as well as the rumour of what was happening. A pizza oven by the grill and patisserie by reception are planned.
For those by the quieter pool the grill bar staff do come round regularly and ask if refreshment is wanted. They swing by the beach and ask as well even though the bar is about 30 feet away. Many thanks to Nicloa, Sasha and Courtney for your care and attention.
There doesn’t seem to be the wide spread of choice on the buffet as there is on the other properties and we did manage to visit Mobay and Negril just to see if we might fancy there another time. However the standard of the food is high, and Michael on the breakfast counter does some mean eggs. There is quite a distance between the buffet and the seating, although sitting on the deck by the sea watching the world go by was wonderful. In the restaurant, the staff were great, particular characters for us were Rochell and Garfield, infectious laugh and a great balancer.
You are on the flight path out of the airport and although the planes seemed quite loud the first day we swiftly zoned out, although this may have had something to do with spending half of the day underwater.
The dive team are great a mix of all sorts of characters, and the dive sites are fairly close by so short boat trips. They only do two tank dives on Mon, Wed, Fri the other days are single dives where the boat comes back in although if you want the second dive you stay on board. The night dive was $80 and was where I have taken what I consider to be my best photo ever. I also completed my deep dive speciality and much to my immense pride my wife passed her open water qualification. A huge thankyou to all, stand by next year.
You are all told when you arrive that if you have any problems to speak to the staff there and then so that it can be sorted, we did and it was. Don’t wait till you get home and winge, cos things just can’t be sorted then. The staff want you to have a good holiday as well.
We are looking forward to next year and have already booked, two weeks is just not enough.
Big plus points – The dive team and the hotel staff all are brilliant, too many to mention all of you, but thank you.
Down sides – No PIMMS, all the other places we have stayed at do Rohan managed to get two bottles for us with the promise of more next year.
Mosquitoes, they find me very tasty but not my wife??? A chap with a fogger comes round in the afternoon, but I don’t know how effective that is. We brought our own spray and burner for the room plus plenty of personal repellent, but they always seemed to get me.
The WiFi connection is expensive at $43 per week and although you have a WiFi signal the internet is intermittent and painfully slow.
Top Tip - Restaurant bookings for SRC are out on Thursday, off property reservations Friday at midday, they don’t take bookings after 6pm, get there early.
