We stayed at Stanza Mare in late February and rented a condo from Linda and Vicente Rivera. They own a unit in the complex and rent out/manage a couple of units there as well. They also own a company that arranges tours and airport transfer service. All in all, they were very helpful and quite friendly. Trust me, as paranoid Chicagoans, we did a lot of research and had a LOT of questions.
The complex itself is very nice; it’s very clean, well kept, secure, and literally steps from the beach. It’s the perfect size; not crowded, not desolate, not overwhelmingly large, not too small. In addition to the pool, there is a private beach complete with security (Carlos – the best!). We prefer the beach but if you want chairs you’ll have to get up pretty early to reserve your spot. This place was exactly what we were looking for. Its very mellow; people keep to themselves, you come and go as you please, close to everything, good food, just perfect. I’ve read some of the negative reviews about this place and I’m wondering where people thought they were staying. Please keep in mind – this is not a resort. It’s a condo complex with individual homeowners who rent out there condos. It has many amenities similar to a resort, a restaurant, pool, beach front, poolside service, etc., but don’t go there and think you’re staying at an all inclusive. It’s more like a vacation rental.
The week we were there was the grand reopening of the Stanza Mare restaurant; new menu, new management, new staff and it was fantastic. The food was excellent and the service was terrific. Brush up your Spanish, not everyone speaks fluent English so ordering could be tricky, but not impossible and the staff was so nice and helpful it was never an issue. The restaurant is more like an outdoor café; there are maybe 10 tables, half shaded half in the sun, and it’s located beside the pool. We ate breakfast there every morning. It was awesome, I’d get up walk over and let Alexi or Finn (the servers) know what we wanted, walk back to my unit to finish my coffee and get my beach bag together and by the time I walked back, breakfast was ready. I don’t know what kind of magic pigs they have in the Dominican, but I swear to god every piece of bacon I had there was the best bacon of my life. All of the food really was great, Friday and Saturday afternoon there were lunch buffets; not the seedy, germ ridden mess you get at an all inclusive or a casino, this was more picnic style. The chef grilled different meats and there was fresh fruit, grilled veggies, and some kind of cabbage salad they served with everything. I loved that salad, couldn’t get enough. We only had dinner there once; which just happened to be a buffet, traditional Dominican fare – all very good. They have a full menu, I think the buffets are a weekend thing.
There area is safe, I never felt vulnerable. We would walk to the nearby store for wine and beer at all times of day and night and it was fine, we sat on the beach at night and drank our wine and it was fine, we walked to a couple of bars down the road a bit and it was fine. There is definitely a security and police presence, but it’s not intimidating; you just know they’re there. There are a couple of bars/restaurants along the beach, fairly expensive but decent food; I recommend the caipirinha at Soles. There is also this flea market/mall on the beach. Once you get within 100 yards of it you’re getting harassed to come check it out. It’s worse once your inside, every stand wants you to see them next and it’s just obnoxious. Avoid it; it’s bloody awful.
I would definitely stay here again!
