On a return visit to Beau Rive and Dominica, I was anxious to see if my good memories of the past would still remain. I wasn't disappointed. The hotel is now complete, the two garden cottages being finished. The garden has matured, the view is as stunning as ever, and the hotel itself welcoming and comfortable. I was delighted to find many new and delicious dishes on the menu, all using fresh local ingredients, which Mark and his staff have created. All seems to run with quiet efficiency and the staff are charming and helpful. For the latter part of my stay I was lucky enough to stay in one of the cottages. They are the same size as the other rooms but you feel you are in a small house, private and surrounded by scented gardens, with your individual view. Even the middle of the nights are a treat when standing on the balcony looking at the blanket of stars above you - an experience so rare in the overlit West! It is hard to criticize Beau Rive. All I can say is that if you love A/C, TV and minibars you will hate it. But, on the other hand, if your idea of a tropical holiday is the breeze blowing through the shutters as you lie on your vast colonial style bed contentedly digesting another great meal and serenaded by the music of nocturnal frogs, you will love it! Beau Rive is a deceptively sophisticated experience.
