We spent six nights here in two stints. Stone-cleaned age-old building on cobbled San Francisco square with modern marbled world-class hotel interior inserted. Quite large and comfortable en-suite room - rather dark, dimly lit and gloomy. Few rooms have plaza view - look out of my window, forgettable back roofing, pipes, shutters, chimneys, the usual mouldering city centre scene. Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff struggle against the deficiencies of Cuba in a modern world. Internet connection varies from intermittent to unobtainable, cellphones on Cubacel perform intermittently/unreliably. We only took breakfast in the hotel, and give or take pedestrian flies on open unprotected plates of fruit, sausage, ham, cereals, cheese etc it was the best meal of the day that Havana has to offer. Centre atrium of this Hotel is open to the skies and with the double front doors open wind off the harbourfront turns San Felipe into a sometimes chilly wind tunnel. Huevos Revueltos con Jamon proved my favoured breakfast, freshly cooked, fine consistency, hot and tasty - well-trained staff rather slow on coffee/tea - but translated my order for 'eggo scrambleato' (never a linguist) with a sympathetic smile and nod. I liked the place - liked the people - slept well - air-conditioning perhaps too enthusiastic, chilly at night until I had learned the art of controlling it - hit the button, and WAIT for the desired effect instead of frenziedly jabbing the thing. Anyway, good effort, and plainly one of today's very best Havanan hotels...with all that implies.
