“Modern hotel with excellent breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2010

The hotel is about 3 miles outside Galway and with traffic and roundabouts, it's awkward to get to. Checking in takes forever since you have to sit down with the receptionist and have juice and go through a slow tedious process. The hotel is clean and new with a big welcoming bar. The underground parking lot is tiny and very poorly lit. There's only one small elevator, so patience is needed for moving between floors.
We were a family of 4 and had a 2 bedroom suite. Very nice and comfortable with lots of space. We had some privacy as the kids slept in the second bedroom (or livingroom) and each had their own bed. TV's were tiny which didn't bother us. Kids room had a DVD player and reception had a good selection of DVD's from which to borrow.
Hotel was quiet, but the room doors were very heavy and slammed shut (we had to be very careful with them in the morning so as not to wake the whole floor. The breakfast (included in our rate) was awesome with lost of choice and a hearty supply of everything except Guinness.
Overall we were very happy and comfortable and left refreshed and well fed. The kids were sad that we only stayed one night, but if we're in the area again, we would definitely go back.

“Have a fabulous stay every time I come here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2010

I have just returned from a business trip to Ireland and stayed in Twelve Hotel where I have stayed many times before! As always I have absolutely no complaints and everything was perfect!

The hotel is located about 15 minute drive from Galway city centre and a cab costs around €15 which isn't too bad if you want to ditch the car for the evening and have a few drinks!
Its worth the drive as Barna is a lovely village located by the sea and there is also a wonderful restaurant called O'Grady's on The Pier which is a 2 minute walk from Twelve which I would totally recommend. Very intimate and cosy and delicious food.

Twelve has its own restaurant but I have never eaten there so cannot comment. This is a bit more up market than the ground floor bar and located on the first floor of the hotel. They also serve food in the bar area on ground floor which is absolutely fine if you don't want anything too fussy and want to stay in the hotel.

Service is excellent in the hotel and I dealt with Hassan on the front desk this time round who went out of his way to be helpful and very friendly. The rate for the hotel was pretty reasonable even though it was Galway Races week and very busy in the city. The rooms are large and boutique like and very comfortable. There are lots of quirky furniture and large mirrors/big unusual lamps etc scattered around the hotel and its one of my favourite hotel interiors.

Breakfast is also very good with a selection of hot and cold food and the hotel went out of its way to accommodate us for breakfast as we had to leave before the official breakfast time of 8am but that wasn't a problem.

All in all I would definitely recommend this hotel if staying in Galway. Its obviously not on the doorstep of the city centre but if you don't mind driving or a short cab ride its really worth staying outside the city centre. There are many pretty average and overpriced hotels in the city centre which you should definitely avoid.

I have brought various clients over the last few years here and they have all really liked it and have said they would like to return with their family/friends!

“Amazing place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2010

Stayed here for a night.

Amazing hotel - really enjoyed my stay here. Didn't want to go home!

Rooms tastefully appointed with lots of nice touches.

Great location and good restaurant in-house (lots of locally sourced products). Minutes from Galway city by car in one direction and Connemara in the other!

“Big disappointment”

Hotel in a poor location for Galway sights. The food was poor. The air conditioning did not work.

“Some good points but....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2010

Stayed here recently for an overnight with 2 course dinner included. Some lovely touches; the handwritten note on arrival welcoming us with the plate of sweet treats, the nice quality bed linen and toiletries in the bathroom, nice bathrobes, good quality coffee maker in the room and the well thought out mini bar. Whilst we found the room a little dark and small, we were ok with this. Unfortunately though the rooms are not soundproofed and neither of us slept a wink the whole night we stayed there due to our neighbours snoring - he might as well have been in the room with us! When mentioned to the receptionist the next day there was a shrug and a "nothing can be done about that". Not really what you wawnt to hear when you have paid for a decent night's sleep - a simple I am sorry to hear that would be some start. However, our greatest criticism is reserved for our dining experience. Having decided to take a walk down Barna pier before dinner, we entered the bar/bistro via the main door and had to make our way through about 10 smokers convening at the door - awful start! Please get a decent smoking area or at least move the bins for the cigarettes away from the front door so as not to encourage people to smoke there. It is extremely offputting to walk through a veil of smoke and ash before you sit down to dinner. The bar/bistro was packed, no harm there, but all we could hear was the scream of small babies and toddlers throwing tantrums - this was 7pm in the evening and we were in the restaurant until after 8.30pm and it continued for the whole time we were there. It was impossible to talk or enjoy any kind of ambience with that going on. Surely, there should be a curfew that hour of the evening for babies and toddlers or at least an area reserved for those who left their own kids at home to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet? The food was reasonable but a very limited choice and I think it would be better to give people a credit amount to choose from the menu. For a place that prides itself on its wine list, I was a little taken aback to be told "red or white" when I asked what wine was available by the glass. We were actually quite shocked by the whole experience - we had really looked forward to our stay and had anticipated great things. Maybe it was a once off but the combination of events made us just want to leave as quickly as possible the next morning.
