“Great Hideaway in the Forest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 December 2009

You can really feel like you are at your own private hideaway in the forest at the Bower. You can get a very good price per night by staying for 3-4 nights. At these rates it's a great deal.

Other commenters have noted most of the good points we only found a few issues. The biggest one for me was light in the morning - there are no curtains of any sort on the living room's wall of glass and no door on the bedroom, which looks good but means that in summertime you'll get quite bright light early in the morning, which could be a problem if you need it darker to sleep (and don't have/like eyeshades) and don't want to get up early. There are blinds on the windows of the bedroom. It's not totally secluded as you can hear the main road at least from the seaward side of the hill but there is relatively little traffic. On the plus side you can also hear and see plenty of birds, frogs and other wildlife (including an echidna). The only other thing is we couldn't figure out how to get the barbecue to light up and so made do with the well equipped kitchen.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review of The Bower. We were delighted to read that you feel our 3-4 night midweek packages are good value and that the wildlife is a plus.
We do appreciate your comments in relation to the morning light. I'm not certain which Bower you stayed in but each Bower has a slightly different orientation and the 2 bedroom Bower has a bedroom that faces away from the sunrise. THerefore, the morning light is not as bright as the easterly facing Bower[s]. This Bower also offers the option of a heavy roman blind to close up the main bedroom so that with all the blinds down, you can exclude the light altogether.
As you've pointed out, the Bower's on the inland side of the hill are more protected from any traffic noise [or the sound of the ocean which can be quite pronounced when there is a heavy swell].
This does allow some flexibility and we'd welcome the opportunity to reserve a Bower for you that meets your exact requirements if you're interested in a returned visit, in future.
We also apologise that you weren't able to get the BBQ lit up. Not sure if you tried to contact us about this [as in the interests of guests privacy we try not to 'hover around'] but please be assured we always welcome any calls seeking help with any of the facilities.
Thanks again for your feedback and while we know you have many choices for a hideaway, we hope you'll give us another try.

“Perfect, but wished we'd stayed longer”

The recent reviews describe the Bower and their wonderful hosts perfectly. The cabins are gorgeous and much thought has gone into all the touches. The bush setting is a delight, a great place to just "be" and we made great use of the BBQ for brekky and dinner. Our 2 night stay was far too short, there is so much to do.....or not......we'd definitely recommend a longer stay, a week as some have experienced would be great. We can't wait to return.

“A gem on the Sapphire Coast of Australia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2009

You know it's time to "get away" when you don't have time to "twitter" and the normally super friendly Jack Russel slinks away when you're in the room. You're telling the kids to shut up and go to their room, and they're not even your own kids....you get the picture...
I not only needed a holiday, It had to be somewhere with the therapeutic and recuperative properties capable of resurrecting the socially dead (My wife's words)...oh and a marriage to save...no pressure!!
It was in this context that I heard about the Bower at Broulee on the magnificent South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. My wife thought it a good idea that nobody would be able to come into contact with me for a few days, so the seclusion offered by the opulent cabins, called Bowers, was perfect.
Nestled in a forest of majestic Spotted Gums was the perfect sanctuary to revive my people skills. Then, hopefully the holiday would begin. As it turned out the night we arrived was an evening of character building cold. Our very thoughtful hosts, Mark and Suzie Berry, had laid on and cranked up a log fire and we sat in the sumptuous spa watching the moon. The curmudgeon I had become of late (Think of Stephen Fry without the funny bits...) was reluctantly almost enjoying himself.

I jumped out of the spa and said to my wife, "Shhhh...here that??? She said "no!"
"Exactly" I said, That's the sound of peace and quiet......"
It wasn't to last though , because we were interrupted by the tiny strange sound of a Sugar Glider whistling past our front deck as I did one of my obsessive audits of the Milky Way to make sure nothing was missing. They are a local marsupial ...Think of a possum that has taken up hang gliding in the dark...now try getting insurance for a hobby like that!!!
We watched the apparently timid little fellow with a hand held spot light provided in all the cabins to study the abundant wildlife. The Bowers have huge tall glass windows so it feels like you are in the forest, not in a building. The inside is 5 star luxury including the white robes, slippers and Egyptian Cotton sheets.
None of the Bowers are near each other. There are excellent walks around the 100 acre property and the Berries were very helpful in answering my many questions about the wildlife.
Our hosts bent over backwards without being at all intrusive...had food brought in at our request and after 2 days according to my wife, I was ready to be presented to the world again, well maybe a small village. We extended our stay to a week and explored the gorgeous coastline and idiosyncratic Mogo...Great Zoo! Inside of which, only a week earlier, I would have made an interesting attraction in one of the more tightly secure enclosures, being poked at with a stick at by beastly children. Amazing what a few days in a perfect hideaway can do for the worst of us.

“A perfect, relaxing getaway for couples, especially nature lovers”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2009

What a great place this is. In one of the best parts of Australia - the beautiful South Coast of NSW. This place is close to Batemans Bay, but the accommodation itself is so quiet and private - quite a combination. We stayed in one of the premium bowers.
The bower itself is wonderful. Everything has been designed with romance and relaxation for 2 in mind. Each bower is almost in total isolation, each is surrounded by trees. All you can see of the other occupants is some lights at night
The bathroom - there is the great spa with room enough for 2, with a big window to outside (don't worry, there's nobody around to see you!). There are even speakers in here, so you can play some music while you relax. There is also a double shower. Bathrobes and slippers are supplied!
The living room is mainly glass, so that you can always see outside. There was a plasma TV mounted on the wall so we could watch some DVDs. The TV is on a bracket and you can swing it around to either watch from the lounge, or in bed - perfect! Right in the middle of the room is an enclosed fireplace to provide both warmth and romance.
The kitchen has everything you need to cook up meals - fan forced oven, cooktop, microwave & all the pans crockery, utensils etc you should need. A great selection of breakfast foods is provided to you - bacon/eggs, croissants, cereal etc & great selection of tea and coffee.
In the bedroom is a very comfy kingsize bed.
Outside there is a great balcony, with 2 comfy sunloungers, table & chairs, and a BBQ. My *only* complaint about the place is that the BBQ isn't great, it's basically just a large hotplate, there's no grill or hood etc. Fine for cooking steak/sausages etc - just don't expect to get too gourmet.
The best part for me though was the bird feeder outside near the balcony. It attracted all sorts of great birds. There was an almost constant presence of Crimson Rosellas & a very cheeky but cute magpie. We also had rainbow lorikeets, a galah, gorgeous King Parrots & Kookaburras. If you like birds, this is an awesome place.

There's also plenty of things to do around the area - if you can wrench yourself away from your bower! Nearby Mogo Zoo is very good, and all around the area are great beaches, restaurants and more.

Overall, this is a wonderful, self contained accommodation. I would definately recommend this place to anyone.
