 St. Louis Hilton

I have reservations at the St. Louis Hilton at 400 Olive St. I got the reservations because I was able to get a really good rate, especially for a hotel downtown. But I really don't know much about the hotel. Is this a pretty good area to stay in for a weekend visitor? Is there much (shopping, entertainment, ect.) that is walkable? Are there any good restauurants near the hotel? How about the hotel's restaurant (400 Olive)?

I'm not familiar with that Hilton, but it's probably a fine hotel. No idea about the restaurant. You are very convenient for walking to Laclede's Landing, which has a few bars that cater mostly to younger crowds. There is also one good restaurant - the Drunken Fish, along with a few okay places. Lumiere Place is also on the Landing and all of their restaurants have received good reviews, although they are pricey.

As you probably know, you're also an easy walk from the Arch and the Old Courthouse. Both are worth visiting.

Good downtown restaurants within easy walking distance include Charlie Gitto's and Mike Shannon's. A good place for breakfast is Rooster. A short cab ride can take you to the Broadway Oyster Bar (cajun - live music - a lowdown fun place). You could also cab to Mosaic (maybe 12 blocks from the hotel, so I guess you could also walk). It's close to the City Museum, if you're going there. I also like to recommend Lafayette Square - Sqwires, Square One, 1111 Mississippi, Ricardo's and Vin de Set are all good restaurants there, Bailey's Chocolate Bar is a fun bar.

Not really much shopping around downtown. What did you have in mind? If you like craft/antique shops, make your way out to Main Street St. Charles. You might also enjoy exploring downtown Kirkwood. Cherokee Street has several antique stores and South Grand / Morganford also has some fun shops and restaurants.

Lots more - anything specific you have in mind? Any questions about attractions?

TTTStLou,We will be arriving in St. Louis on Friday evening. That is why I was thinking about just going to the hotel restaurant (400 Olive) that evening. There is not much about it here on TA, but from what I have found it sounds pretty good. After going through the restaurants that you mention, 1111 Mississippi sounds really good, so I thought that we could go there Saturday night (I had been considering Harry's but it doesn't seem to get very good reviews here. So now I am looking for something for Sunday night, which seems more of a challenge since it looks like there are some that aren't open. Do you know anything about St. Louis Gast Haus? I think that it is near 1111 Mississippi, and from what I have read sounds pretty good except for the fact that it is only open until 8 o'clok, which would mean an early dinner. Any other suggestions for Sunday night, something fairly casual but nice? As far as shopping goes, we like any type. I thought that Saturday morning that we might go by the Farmer's Market and then head down to Cherokee Street. Is there other shopping in that area? Sunday, we were thinking about going to St. Charles. And one day we really want to fit in the botanical garden. Will it still be good to see in early October? We will be leaving Monday. Am I trying to fit too much into a weekend?

The St. Louis Hilton is a fine hotel, and if I were staying downtown, it's where I'd want to be located.

It's in a renovated bank, the public areas are very nicely done.

If you want some of the long standing local flavor, I suggest Charlie Gitto's Downtown (6th & Pine). that said, other posters have already offered some fine suggestions as well. There are natioanl chain restaurants at Union Station too, which can be easily reached by the Metro.

You have a wealth of things to see within walking distance too.

The hotel is very nice. We stayed there last year. The hotel restaurant is excellent. Great service and food. It's a little pricey, but not outrageous.

As others have said, you are in walking distance of lots to do. I personally don't find Laclede's Landing to be all that great anymore. Depends on what you like. There are lots of bars available and several restaurant choices there.

As far as shopping, there isn't a whole lot downtown. I would check out St. Louis Galleria if you want a large mall.

Note that if you are planning on going up in the arch, you will need to plan ahead. We stopped there a few weeks ago and you must now be screened before entering. Depending on the line, this can take quite awhile. We didn't go up because the the next trip was at 6 and we were in line at 2. Don't know if you can buy tickets ahead.

Yes, one can purchase tickets to the Arch in advance. They are non-refundable. I suggest waiting until the day you want to go and purchase them there. At this time of year, especially on weekdays, the wait is not overbearing.
