Hi all, we are three adults (none of use are night club age but love good food) to Bangkok for a few days in April. I have been searching through accommodation for days! Can someone please help me refine my search and provide some advice as to which area I should be concentrating on? Our primary purpose for visiting is the shopping but we also want to be able to see some of the city.

Sukhumvit, Siam, Silom are very popular.
As long as you are close to the skytrain line it should not matter to much.
Maybe give a guide to your price range.
How much money per night do you want to spend on a hotel room? Kids and younger tourists usually head for Khao San Road. But not too many of them have an interest in that much shopping. (No rail service available.)

Shopping, maybe for the purpose of reselling in your own country, consider the Pratunam area. From the airport it is possible to use the Airport Rail Link (commuter train) to take you to Ratchaprorop Rail Link stop. Walk from that stop to this hotel. (No rail service after midnight.)

Street vendors, malls, nightlife, good restaurants available on Sukhumvit Road. Streets still alive at 2 a.m. with tourists and locals walking about. Easy access to Skytrain.

P.S. If you plan on all using the same hotel room there will be extra charges for extra people. Extra people in a hotel room use more towels, make a bigger mess, etc.
On the urbanrail.com link, ignore the routes with dashed lines (which don't exist unless something just happened overnight!).
The Pathumwan Princess Hotel is a 4.5-star place attached to eclectic MBK mall, and connected to lots of other shopping via elevated walkways and the SkyTrain. If that's beyond your price range, there are <1000 baht/night guest houses nearby - and much in between those price ranges.
I would agree with Marley2 re locations - and maybe emphasise both Siam and Sukhumvit.

Terminal 21 Mall is in Sukhumvit next to both the Asoke BTS station and the Sukhumvit MRT station.
For 3 of you accomodation wise you could look at Teja Lake View apartments it is on Soi 4 Sukhumvit, you can rent a 2 bedroom apartment for about £22 (the smaller one) or £33 (the larger 1) There is a comp tuk tuk to the top of Soi 4 where you can get the sky train (Nana BTS) which will get you most places you might want to go. The apartments are NOT serviced but do have 24hour security. There are lots of restaurants and bars nearby to suit all tastes.
