Going to Bantry, Ireland in February for 4 days

Hi, I have read with interest the many posts about Baltimore, Bantry and surrounding areas, we are flying into Kerry in February and looking forward to spending 3 full days (4 nights) - hopefully walking (and driving) around the south, we have a hotel booked (The Maritime Hotel in Bantry) so now I would love some suggestions as to what is best to do see during those few precious days - bearing in mind it will most likely be very cold and possibly raining or snowing!!!

I already know we are going to a local 'Irish' pub - that is a must :)

Hi There,

A few of my suggestions to you would be to explore the Beara Peninsula www.bearainfo.com

Mizen Head Lighthouse is also another attraction in your area www.mizenhead.ie

And i am not sure what the opening hours are for Garnish Island at that time of the year or if its even open but do take a look at www.cork-guide.ie/garnish

You will get lots more suggestions from other TA members.

Enjoy your trip !

What a lovely area to visit, not to sure about in February though, as it may be cold, but looking forward to your trip report afterwards.

I stayed in the Maritime in Bantry last October and really liked it a lot - wrote a review, tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g211922-d651…

It has a beautiful leisure centres and the restaurant is good for both breakfast and evening meal. The bar wasn't great to be honest but I recommend the large bowl of mussels in the bar if you want something light to eat. Make sure you ask for a room on the top floor as the bedrooms face onto the main street and while it isn't particularly noisy, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Sadly, Batnry town itself was badly littered and could do with a little TLC. Just down the road (two mins walk) is a very good Centra mini market where you can buy any nibbles, newspapers or vino that you might like to take to your room.

Mary99 has given you good ideas up there. Also consider Bantry house which is only 'up the road' but alas the house is not open until March but you may be able to walk in the gardens which are very impressive www.bantryhouse.com

Beara Peninsula is beautiful and Mary99 has put a link there to that. There is so much to see on this pen that I wouldn't know where to start, but Castletownbere and Allihies are two villages of note to aim for if you have time.

Do not leave Bantry without driving on the Sheeps Head peninsula. It is gorgeous and not far from Bantry. It is a lot smaller than Beara Pen. The little village of Durrus has a very nice restaurant that you should try and get to for lunch or dinner (if it is open) www.thegoodthingscafe.com

You must drive your car to the tip of the peninsula, park at the little carpark near the end and walk out (weather permitting) to the very tip of the peninsula where the views are stunning. On the way back why not stop in Ahakista and look at the memorial garden and large sundial in memory of the Air India disaster of 1985. (Ahakista is also home to Graham Norton, so why not search him out and join him for pint !)

Mizen head is out at the end of the Mizen Peninsula and while it is probalby worth a visit if you have time you must pay for the privilege and personally I think the Sheeps head tip is much nicer, less touristy and free!

You mentioned walking and the whole area around Bantry is a walkers paradise.

Enjoy your trip and fingers crossed here for dry weather.

Thank you for much for the advice - and web site links, haven't had time to look much yet, as I live on Ibiza, so its the holiday season for us here' (3 Kings!!!) - we do enjoy ourselves out of season with walkers groups, house parties - and lots of get togethers!!!

I am totally looking forward to my Ireland trip as I have only driven through Ireland on my way to Belfast many years ago. I will let you know how it all went after our extensive trip which takes us from london to Kuala Lumpur and then on to Koh Samui Thailand - where my daughter lives :) so it is quite a long trip and we expect to be back in Ibiza late March - ready for the season here!! Thank you

Wow - you have a beautiful country stunning!!! Thank you all for your advice during the 3 days we had fabulous sunny weather (cold was not a problem :)

The Hotel Maritime - is a superb hotel, Bantry is quaint - we ate at an excellent restaurant (The fish kitchen - above the fish market). We had the 'valentines meal' at the hotel - again excellent. We visited: Baltimore and on to Mizen Head (it was closed by the way). Traveled almost the full 'Ring of Beara' including going up to old copper mines, we returned via 'Healey's Pass' - we sought out numerous stone circles, and ritual burial sites. Walked across fantastic hillsides. Visited The Blarney castle - where my other half kissed the Blarney stone (I'm terrified of heights!!). Walked around the enchanted gardens and made wishes on the stone steps besides the waterfall. On our return to Kerry airport we visited the National Park, where part of the lakes were frozen over - making for some stunning scenery. All in all we had the most fabulous time and we will make the time to go back again and again and again :) Thank you everyone for the good advice.xx
