Sat Navs in Ireland and Wales

We are making a 5 week driving tour of Ireland and Wales. Is it true that our GPS will not serve us well in Ireland and Wales? Except for landing and taking off at airports, we will not be in large cities and will be mostly in the rural areas. I need to make a decision to spend the $ to download the ireland and United Kingdom maps. Is is worth it?

I have found that I can get most of the directions for the various golf courses and lodgings from Goggle maps. Will these be helpful?

What do other travelers use for electronic communications while traveling. I am considering purchasing an IPAD.

any thoughts about this or other devises?

Thank you--you were very helpful on my last question. cinjer

It's not electronic, but I just purchased the OSI atlas of Ireland. It is great. It's more up to date with the new Motorways than any of the electronic maps, including Google and the AA website in Ireland. I'm biased in that I am not comfortable using a GPS real time.

I used my Garmin GPS (Nuvi) in Ireland twice now - and it has been relatively flawless. The first time it took me through Dublin and to the west - visiting Kilkenny, Waterford, Cashel, Kinsale, Killarney, Dingle, Doolin, and Galway - the second time we spent two weeks in Dingle / Doolin and doing day trips.

No problems at all on rural roads . . .

We used our own Garmin Nuvi and had purchased an Ireland SD card for it on EBAY. We found it to be extremely helpful. We used it along with our maps and AA atlas. The Garmin did very well in the countryside and even knew the cowpaths. Signage can be good to non-existent depending where you are in Ireland. Traveling would have been much harder without the GPS.

We also brought our netbook with us so that we could call and skype with our children and grandchildren. We also used it, of course, to keep up with email and send pictures via the SD card in our camera with the netbook.

We also had an unlocked phone which we purchased an Ireland SIM card. We used this to call B&B's and to receive incoming calls from family. Most of the B&Bs that we stayed at had WiFi.

I would love an iPad and when it ever gets a video camera, I will replace the netbook with it, but for the time being and for the cost,if video conferencing is important to you, the netbook works greatgreat. We even walked around with it.. so the family could see the parts of Ireland that we were in. These are just some thoughts that worked for us for 3 weeks traveling around Ireland.
