 Looking for Trant relatives

My surname is Trant. My grandfather came to US from a place called fouroughmore near Lispole on Dingle Peninsula. His name was Patrick.I know he had A brother Michael who also came to US(early 1900's).and settled in Chicago. My grandfather settled in Western Massachusetts.I am trying to locate any living relatives in Dingle area,as I would very much like to meet them when I come to Ireland next year. Can anyone assist me? Know any Trant's in Dingle?

I did a quick search on the Ireland Census and found a Foheraghmore in Kinard near Tarbert in North Kerry (not near Dingle though) and found some Trants, two brothers named Patrick (15) and Michael (6) in 1901.

There is also a Foheraghmore just outside of Lispole in Dingle? There are also some Trants on the northern side of the Peninsula in Stradbally and while there is a Michael there is no Patrick.

Feel free to search for yourself at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ It can be tricky to understand the place names but have goolge maps open and it can usually pin point all locales.

Here's the Census for you Grandfather's family from the 1901 Census including your great-grandmother Catherine who was widowed at the time

…nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp…

The townland of Foheramore is in the civil parish which is a couple of miles east of Dingle town

There were no Trants living in Cahertrant, which is west of Dingle inn 1901 or 1911 (the two years for which the online census is avaiable).

I have not heard of any Trants currently living locally and the telephone directory shows some in Blennerville, Tralee and Killarney but none on the peninsula.

Heres the entry:

eircomphonebook.ie/search/…Trant.html

This is not exhaustive becuase it does not inculde any subscribers who are "ex-directory" by choice

The attached link might help you track down some more on your family

Tony,

There is a Kinard on the Dingle Peninsula, near Lispole. It is close to Minard. So the entry you refer matches merlotmo's family details

That would probably be my grandfather(Patrick)as he came to US in 1917 and was in his 30's.Brother Michael was also much younger. Both now deceased. As you can see, family history very "sketchy".Patrick born 1886(just located birth certificate-I am dual-citizen)His birth was registered in "District of Dingle".You're right! Says he was born in "Foroughmore,Kinard".Thanks so much for info.Hope I can find out more......merlotmo

I'm certain it is. Don't worry too much about the various spellings of the townland name - Fogheramore, Foroughmore, Foheramore. This is because the names ar originally and Irish and would have "angliscised" in various ways.

It's all the fault of the English ;)

Patrick born 1886(just located birth certificate-I am dual-citizen)

Are his parents name mentioned on the birthcert ?

If the Catherine on the census is indeed his mother then they were farmers and should be listed in Griffith's Valuation which is an index of landowners from about 1860. If you have Patrick's father's name then we may be able to locate the exact house where they lived.

Thanks !

I found a tree on Ancestry that is probably yours but it only mentions Patrick and not Michael. And it doesn't mention any other kids but I know that there was also a Bridget Trant (b1877) and a Mary Trant (b1870)

10. Re: Looking for Trant relatives

I found a page listing Thomas and Catherine's marriage record (09-02-1869) but no sign of either a Thomas Trant or a Michael Trant as landowners or tenants in or around the Dingle area.

http://www.igp-web.com/kerry/mardingle5.html

There were 3 possible family connections (based on the fact that they're in the Dingle area). All are tenants.

Catherine Trant in Farran is about 3 miles from Ballyrishteen
