Day trips from Bologna by train?

So I will be in Bologna for three days in September. While there, I am looking to take advantage of the great train links to the nearby heritage cities of Ravenna, Modena, Parma and Ferrara.

I know I won't get chance to do them all as I want to to enjoy Bologna but it's a great base for day trips. I enjoy architecture and particularly enjoy the old, medieval cities.

So which of these would you recommend and why?

Which cities would you prioritise over the others?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Ferrara is always high on my list of priorities. It's a small town rich with ancient history. Although some buildings were demolished, and some retrofitted, it still looks much like it did during Quattrocento. I still haven't seen everything I wanted there. I would also look into Mantua for similar reasons. Search for pictures of these cities on Google and for videos on Youtube.

I can only speak for Ferrara and Mantua but if you think you have castles in Wales ! nothing prepares you for the Este fortress in the centre of Ferrara. It has been very thoughtfully made visitor friendly with surprise surprise texts in English ! You can also take refreshment beneath a ceiling which I like to think was contemporary with Lucretzia Borgia's time as the Duchess.

The Palazzo Schiffanoia takes a bit of finding but the frescos of this Este fun palace are absolutely charming, it's a pity they don't run to some English descriptions there !

Mantova is harder to get to but if you are a fan of the Gonzagas it is an absolute must.

Bob.
