I am having difficulty understanding tour options for a hike in the Dolomite/Alpe De Suisi region. My husband and I are travelling in July to Venice on July 9th planning to stay two to three days and then want to head up for a week in the Dolomite area. We are both 55 and fit and like to hike but have no real high altitude experience. We are trying to evaluate whether we can plan ourselves, need a self guided tour options versus guided. We are concerned about not schlepping our bags between rifugios but would love to stay in at least one and so are thinking that a base/hut combination is good. I also see that Sud Tirol regions in the area of the Dolomites offer lower cost and possible less crowded options. Does anyone have an opinion on local tour operators who are reasonably priced? Also need to work out how to get from here to Munich by the 21st. So.. we need help planning an itinerary based on Leaving Venice on the 11th or 12th and arriving in Munich on the 21st. Car or public transport?
