 day trips from Lamego

Hi,

We will be staying at Aquapura Hotel in Lamego (Douro Valley) next month for 4-5 days.

Does anyone have any recommendations on day trips? I was thinking of visiting Amarante, Vila Real, Pinhao Guimaraes maybe.

We also want to visit some quintas. What are the best places to visit for wine and port tasting in this region?

is it possible to get around this region without a car? If we have to have a car, does anyone recommend any good car rental companies?

Thanks.

You can also go for a river cruise on the Douro Valley.

It is very hard to get around the region from Lamego without a car as you are 12km/7 miles from the nearest railway station at Regua. Buses are very few and far between. The railway runs along the valley from east to west and does serve Pinhao but none of the other places. Train service to Vila Real is currently suspended; buses instead from Regua 4 - 5 times a day.

The Rodonorte bus company provides many services between the major in the region but services are sparse

http://www.rodonorte.pt/horarios.php is the timetable page.

There may be other local buses but I have no current information.

Hope that helps a little.

Just returned from 5 days in Lisbon and 4 in Regua, you need a car to get around the Duoro, limited public transportation. Unless there is a specific quinta in Pinhao there really isn;t anything to see in that town.

In Vila Real don’t forget to visit the Mateus Palace. Wonderful!!

A “must” see site.

Rodonorte is the best option for public transportation in the area, but I advise you to rent a car. Try Europcar or Hertz.

thank you all! we decided to rent a car from lisbon and drive up to Lamego, and have the car during our stay there.

depending on the weather, we plan to stop by Amarante, Villa Real, Pinhao, and maybe guimaraes/ braga too. and of course visit some wineries in the region. I'm really really hoping that we get at least 2 days of no rain during our 5 night stay there!

Hi there,

We too will be in northern Portugal next spring - try to get to the Thursday market in Barcelos/there is a Friday market in Guimaraes and a market in Armarante - I think on Tuesdays. We will have a car as well - and the drive along the Douro - I think its N122 - but check on this route number - is supposed to be quite spectacular.Best regards.

Aquapura was great~ one of the best hotels i've stayed at.

We got an amazing deal through luxurylink.com & spent 5 nights at the vineyard villa.

It was a one bedroom villa/ duplex- with a full kitchen which was great b/c food at the hotel is very expensive. there's a supermarket about 15 min from the hotel, so we cooked in as much as possible.

It's really beautiful there, there's a really nice spa, and in the summer it should be even better, you can take advantange of their outdoor pools and decks.

Anyway let me know if you have any specific questions about the hotel or its surrounding areas~ we had a wonderful time there.
