We will be staying in Lugano for 4 days in September. Can anyone suggest any worthwhile day trips.
Thanks in advance.

There is plenty to do in and around Lugano for 4 days so I am not sure what you mean by 'day trips from Lugano'. For ideas take a look at the Lugano Tourism website.
My trip report below might give you some ideas - especially "day 3" which we felt was very worthwhile.
There is the Lugano regional pass for 3 or 7 days !!
at : www.utpt.ch - this is a wonderfull mean to see Lugano and all the region ! we just return from 8 full days in Lugano where we did a lot each day and till did not see all the opportunities offered there !!
God bless this regional pass !! it is a real tool for people who realy want to see a lot
From Bruno/Lugano. 24.6.2010. My suggestions for 3 days in and around Lugano are: 1/day: browse around the city-centre, visit cathedral+church degli angioli, take the tourist-train which brings you from one corner to the other lakeside; in the afternoon take the funicular to monte bré; 2/day: in the morning take the funicular to monte san salvatore; in the afternoon take the boat for the "grand lake roundtrip" (grande giro del lago) - leaves at 14.40 and last about 3 hours; 3/day make a trip to locarno+funicular/cableway to cardada/cimetta: you would have to take the train from lugano to bellinzona and change for the connexion to locarno (1 hour); from there take the funicular to madonna del sasso (visit the monastery) and then take the cableway to cardada and afterwards the other one to cimetta (phantastic view on pre-alps and alps); on the way back you would have sufficient time to visit locarno-town and may-be the adjacent borough of ascona (the swiss saint-tropez). have a nice trip.
