 Lugano Hotels and autos

Going to be in Switzerland for 5 nights in April. I am thinking of Locarno or Lugano. Which is the most historic and senic? Can someone recommend a moderatly priced hotel and if I need a car to visit a couple of the nearby cities can I find a reasonable car rental agency.

I know that Lugano has an airport. Does Locarno?

Lugano is a small city, Locarno is rather a smallish/midsize lakeside town. You can see both and add Bellinzona with it's 3 castles (UNESCO World Culture heritage) as well.

For hotels, see www.rooms.ch or www.hotel.de.

You don't need a car. You can rent one if you wnat but don't _need_ it to get around.

For traveling around without, see www.sbb.ch/en

Locarno is just 20 km from Lugano and both are 50 km from a major international airport (Milan Malpensa). Does that answer your question? :-)

To me the prettiest lakeside town in the Ticino is not Lugano nor Locarno but Ascona. It is really lovely and well worth a visit.

You do not need a rental car. You can get anywhere you want by train, lake boat or bus. But there are rental car offices in Lugano and Locarno. (usually at local garages).

Lugano is the most romantic, they are 25-30 minutes apart in any case. Make sure you drive up the mountain in Lugano, there is an awesome cafe on top that is breathtaking.

Car Rental won't be necessary almost everything is done by train. That is the best way to see any city in Europe anyway.

Thank you for your great input and advice.

OK No car. I'll do it by train.

I have made a tentative reservation at the Pestalozzi Hotel. Do you have any knowledge about it? And how about restaurants? Places to see?

Sorry to be such a pest but I want to get the most out of this trip!

Good decision to use public transport. This doesn't only mean trains, especially in the Ticino - lake boats and busses are all part of the network as well.
