We will be in Mantova 8 or 9 Oct. Someone mentioned boat rides on a lake or river. Anyone know about this possibility or how to find out about this? Thanks for any help.

There are boat trips, canoe rides and bicycling around the lakes, as the city is surrounded by the River Mincio and several lakes. I can find information in Italian but there will be no problems in accessing information about this once you are in the town. Mantua is an absolute treat of a city. You will love it. Don't miss a visit to the Ducal Palace
I love Mantua, but don't know about boat rides. Please come back later and post to tell us about your experience with the boats.
Hi,
this (Italian only): http://www.perilparco.com/content/view/18/37/
is the official website for the boat riding association, and they organize Autumn birdwatching rides upon request, by calling +39. 0376. 225724

I strongly reccomend the "Mincio's Boatmen":
http://www.fiumemincio.it/homei.htm (EN)
They have these small boats and will take you around the Mincio river to spot birds and fish of all kinds.
I'm not sure they speak English. Give them a call to make sure they do!
Hope this helps!
I will be in Mantova for a few days at the end of September. Is it necessary - or advantageous to have car to get to the lakes and river? I would also like to get out to the countryside, but hear it can be expensive having a car as I would need to pay for parking. Would appreciate any replies.
I suggest you go to maps.google.com type in Mantua Italy and look at the map that comes up. Mantua has rivers and lakes all around and it is easy to slip outside the city walls and come to the lakes. People fish and boat there and it is all quite lovely and easy to access. I am sure some of the addresses given in the post above will suggest places to go to catch a boat.
