 Limerick Research
Destination Expert   What's this?
for Limerick, Killarney

For those of you doing research on Limerick, either from a geneaolgical perspective or another perspective, there are a number of excellent websites to help you access the past including the Limerick Chronicle archives only just released:

http://www.limerick.ie/library/localstudies/ - There's a lot of Limerick data, easily accessed here including electoral registers, obituaries, heads of households of the 1901 census etc.

ulir.ul.ie/simple-search…

This is very old issues of the Limerick Chronicle courtesy of the Glucksman Library in UL

If you have individual names then this will help:

And of course the 1911 Census

The individual name search above doesn't work.

This site gives you the same information plus some more

Ferdia,

If you would like to check the data to the right of this thread on the Limerick Forum, you will find it is already a FAQ ;o)

I've been doing some family research recently and have encountered some very interesting links. Limerick Corporation have been very generous with their archives. Some data will not be available for a long time, but there is other data of interest available.

I've been checking other boroughs where I have family and Limerick seems to be particularly good in terms of information.

Thanks for interesting links. I am, however, interested in 19th century digitized journals, books, lettters, etc, but not in genealogy. This is for academic research conducted from abroad, not for family study.

Wondering are you familiar with the Gluckman's Library searching interface.

Out of the blue I found a digitized picture http://ulir.ul.ie/handle/10344/176

but could not find any list of publications available to browse, or a search engine with an option 'search full texts." Do you think that it was incidental?

Hi Ascocenda,

The Glucksman Collection as far as I know, only contains the Limerick Chronicle, currently, but is a work in progress.

This page may be more accessible for you http://www2.ul.ie/web/WWW/Services/Library

There is a section here entitled "Library News" and you may be able to access more here.

Also Limerick Corporation have more data:

http://www.limerick.ie/Archives/

Some of the data may not be available for perusal for some time.

And you may have to download the DjVu programme - its quite safe.

If you have the ability to physically come over to Limerick, then Limerick City Library has a lot of data in microfiche and paper form.

Hi, Beanalainn

Thanks for your prompt reply. Indeed, I can see that it might require a UL login to search in the form for journals and articles. Apparently it integrates all subscribed sources.

I know the page of Limerick Archives, it is excellent! And they are also responsive by e-mail. I remember a very nice mail exchange with Larry Walsh from the Museum, about which photograph of W.S.O'Brien in his collection online is fake, which is real ;)

Yes, I am familiar with djvu format. We have in Poland a net of local digital libraries with many free local resources, mostly in djvu, made from 19th century (and older) materials. Actually, I was looking for something similar in Ireland (I know the C ELT project and old Irish MSS online. but it is slightly different. time range and maerial) Hope one day it emerges, and not everything will be given to commercial vendors (like Freeman's journal or Irish Times..)!

(I have already did some research in Ireland, using Freeman's Journal , etc.in libraries. Maybe I will come back one day..)

Planning a trip to Ireland next spring, and was wondering if anyone would suggest Ennis, Limerick, or Galway? Might not have time to do all three - will have our own car. I prefer smaller towns to larger ones. Thanks.
