We have 3 days to explore ROK and Dingle. Thought we would base in Killarney. Any suggestions on lodging for a married couple, no kids? We like to be close to pubs and shops, but not in the middle of a big city. Thanks!

Killarney is not what could be called in any way a big city and there is a wide range of accommodation options. My place of choice is the Eviston right in the middle of town or the Killarney Court which is just out but within easy walk of town. I generally book one of the mid range rooms and consider upgrading on arrival depending on the offer they make.
Not sure what your budget is but you may wish to look at http://www.themalton.com/ and http://www.killarneyparkhotel.ie/ Both are as close to town as you can get without being in it as they both sit on their own grounds on the edge of town. They are both more expensive than what has been mentioned by tony2phones but definitely worth it if you can afford them.
i highly recommend hussey's townhouse....it is located at the far end of high street, easy walking distance to everything in city centre....they have a car park, so i just always park my car and never move it until i am ready to leave....i think i paid 55 euro but that was for a single....geraldine is a great hostess and serves a really good breakfast....these rooms are over the pub but i never heard anything from my room...no trouble sleeping well before the pub closed....

Oma. great to hear the Husseys is treating you well. It was my grandfathers local, may he rest in peace. He would always sit in the snug just inside the door and may have gotten a bit put out if a group was there before him as he would still insist on sitting there. Going there every night for decades though the staff knew his schedule and so would advise any 'irregulars.' He was always delighted if any of us where able to meet him there while he partook of his constitution: a glass of Guinness and a shot of Powers. In later years it became a trendy hang out with some occasional DJs but honestly I have not set foot inside the door in years.
Spent 3 days in Killarney in June. Stayed at a great B&B called Larkinley Lodge. Just remodeled and it is beautiful. Breakfast was fantastic and the price is right. Walking distance to downtown and Killarney Natl Park.
tony what a great memory for you....i have stayed there 3 times but have never sat in the pub for a drink....too dark for me...lol...but the townhouse is lovely.....
