Parking in Derry and walking the walls
Destination Expert   What's this?
for Dublin, Achill Island, County Wicklow, County Dublin

We'll be spending a week in Antrim in early August and want to spend a day visiting Derry. Our main plan while we're there is to walk to the walls and visit the Tower Museum (and generally just enjoy the city, so any suggestions will be gratefully received!).

We'll be travelling in two separate cars due to numbers in our group so need to plan car parking in Derry before we set out so we can meet up on arrival. Does anyone have any suggestions for convenient parking in the city centre, reasonably close to the attractions we want to visit? Cost within reason isn't an issue for us.

Also, one of our group is an elderly woman who is reasonably mobile but who is a little concerned about walking the walls. Any general advice on the terrain and whether it's likely to be too challenging for her?

Many thanks - we're really looking forward to our visit!

This is a useful link to show you carparking options. It depends on what way you are coming into the city which carpark is most convenient. I personally use quayside which is fairly cheap and suits me - if you are coming in from Coleraine, cross Foyle bridge and follow the city centre signs. It is also convenient for meeting at Guildhall.

The terrain around the walls is quite rough with steps but it's been a good while since I last walked around so I can't really comment much on that. Hopefully a local will be able to advise on current conditions. I can't remember if there are any benches on the way around to rest but hopefully tourist information will help with that - or another TA poster.

Many thanks for this, ponaire - we will indeed be coming from Coleraine so this is very helpful.

If the lady would find climbing a little difficult then consider parking in the Foyleside shopping centre. Then use the escalators or lifts in the centre to make your way to the top level. Go out to the street from there and you are beside the walls at close to the highest level. If you then walk in a clockwise direction and almost walk the full circle you can come off the walls at a lower level to make your way back to the shopping centre at the lowest level.

Many thanks for these very helpful suggestions - we're really looking forward to this! Will keep the Tower Hotel in mind for another visit - this visit is sadly only for the day as we will be spending the week based in Glenarm.

Thanks again!

The gradient on the walk around the Walls is tough in a couple of parts, as it is on streets such as Shipquay Street. The older person in your party may find it a struggle, particularly if the weather is bad.

You should visit the Museum of Free Derry, and talk a cruise on the River Foyle.

For parking, go to Bishop Street Outer. Don't park inside the walls as it can be a nightmare to get out, particularly when it's a Saturday.

I recommend parking at the Foyelside shopping car park too. The tourist office is right nearby and if you want to do a walking tour you can go in and get info on one. Inside the shopping mall there are free computers with Internet access in case you need a email fix on your trip. Just across the bridge turn right and it is a short distance after. Keeping in mind there are TWO bridges, if coming from the north to south it is the second shorter bridge.

Avoid Foyleside Shopping Centre car park, particularly if it's a Saturday. The queues can be very bad as the car park's layout isn't great. Stick to my original idea: Bishop Street Outer.

Foyleside Car Park will be ok to get access to if you're arriving early enough in the morning (before 10.00am) - there are 2 car parks - one on each side of Foyle St - just follow the signs (take second right turn off the roundabout when leaving Craigavon Bridge).

Alternatively, Bishop St. car park (inside the Walls) is another option but it's smaller and not as easy to find as Foyleside. After driving up Carlisle Road (1st right turn at the roundabout), drive under the Gate on to Ferryquay Street and then take the first right at the Diamond - this will leave you on Bishop St - the car park is on the right almost opposite the Courthouse building.

Regarding cost, Bishop St. would be cheaper.

Hope this helps.

I meant to include a few options for eating:

The Exchange (behind Guildhall on the left)

Halo Pantry or The Bentley Bar (beside each other on Newmarket St)

Badger's Bar (Orchard St - between Foyleside and Richmond Ctrs)

Fitzroy's Wine Bar (Carlisle Rd - beside top entrance to Foyleside Ctr)

Hope this helps.

PS. An easier way to get to the top of Shipquay St (quite steep) is to walk half way up, go in to the Richmond Centre (on the left) and exit at the top entrance using escalators/lifts!
